Legend had it. The Who was banned from Philly.

No. They played there many times. One of the very few places, the Spectrum, where they played Quadrophrenia on tour.

So long to David Crosby. I didn't even remember that he was with the Byrds before Stills, Nash, and Young.

Quadrophenia was such a great record, largely a creation of the highly innovative Townsend. Quadrophonic sound was like this aural concept that arc'd briefly, then disappeared. I always figured it would be brilliant for a four-piece band, a mike on each member, but then it never got applied that way (likely for good reason). Instead, it served for more definition for the multi-tracking that was going on back then in the pre-digital era. I briefly kicked around the notion of investing in a quadrophonic system, but after an hour or two with a tech at a high-end hi-fi shop, I decided it wasn't worth it. You only have two ears, after all.

I actually had a QX-8000 amp/receiver with 4 speakers (2 of those CS-88a...). Good for removing paint and breaking glassware... Entwhistle did a lot of mixing on many of their albums and that quad effect could be appreciated surrounded by 4 speakers. Quadrophenia was far more complicated to record and mix; huge amount of multi-tracking and overdubbing. Worth reading some: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrophenia

I currently drive a 35-year-old Technics SA-OX170 lashed to four Yamaha bookshelf 3-way speakers (not sure of the model number without pulling things down). More than capable of suppressing the conversation, lol.
Last I checked, you'd need to find a vintage copy of Quadrophenia to find a true quadrophonic recording. If you get a current vinyl or disc version today, it's just stereophonic (as far as I know). Four speakers sound great, but it still just stereophonic. You gotta have a quadrophonic recording and a quadrophonic system (four "channel") with four speakers to get the full effect. It would be neat to hear it again, but I don't recall it being anything terrifically more than just a novelty sound-wise. I cannot, however, claim to be a true audiophile...just crank it up!
My real weakness is hardcopy discs. I can't bear to buy music downloads, as I have to have the packaging, including the liner notes (if provided). It's a terrible weakness.

Never play it though - don't have a system worth the time to pull it from storage.
Worth some coin, I suspect.
With regards to their last record, if it proves to be their last, not a bad way to go out. I thought the second track might have been a cover of a tune by Social Distortion. Thankfully not.

Maybe, as it has the full book inside that the original issued vinyl included. There's 600+ vinyl stored away......just never had the heart to trash them. Did convert a good number of the ones that I've not seen as CRs over to electronic files.

I never really knew much about the WHO. Today I took the time to read more about them. they appear to be a very talented group. What I find interesting is how these very talented individuals can sometimes be so self destructive. Especially Keith Moon. Reading about him was kinda SAD.
He had a thing about blowing things up, like toilets in hotels. It looks like the ultimate was when he blew up the drums on the Smothers brothers show.

Re: Seen in Print
If you had watched the program on PBS about the making of the recording "Classic Quadrophenia", you would have heard Pete Townshend say that "Quadrophenia" (the original) was not about four channel sound at all. It was about the boy suffering from an affliction similar to being "double bi-polar", hence the "quad".
The show also explained why the "Classic Quadrophenia" was recorded without drums, only timpani.
