CRISIS ON THE BORDER

Postby HONDO74 » Sun May 23, 2021 8:15 pm

Interesting to read this from the BBC. Not a word from our own liberal media or the democrats that were down on the border a couple of years ago protesting :( :( :(

Children speak of sickness and neglect in US asylum camps
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57149721

The US has a vast system of detention sites scattered across the country, holding more than 20,000 migrant children. In a special investigation, the BBC has uncovered allegations of cold temperatures, sickness, neglect, lice and filth, through a series of interviews with children and staff.

It was midnight on the Rio Grande - the imposing river that forms the border between Texas and Mexico - and lights began to flash on the Mexican side. Voices could be heard in the darkness. Figures emerged, got into a small raft, and began to cross the river.

As the raft appeared on the US side, the faces of the migrants became visible. More than half of them were children. Over March and April, more than 36,000 children crossed into the US unaccompanied by an adult. This was a record high for recent years.

Many children travelling alone set out on their journey hoping to reunite with a parent already in the US. More than 80% of them already have a family member in the country, the US government says.

President Joe Biden has opened the border to unaccompanied children seeking asylum, somewhat relaxing former President Trump's policy of turning migrants away due to Covid-19.

The children scrambled up the banks, exhausted. Two young cousins held hands. Another youth, Jordy, 17, said he had fled Guatemala because he was afraid of violent gangs operating there. But tonight he was frightened about what might await him in migrant detention centres in the US. He said he had heard stories about them.

"They will put us in an icebox and ask us questions," he said.

The so-called "iceboxes", notorious among migrants, are extremely cold rooms or cubicles in US Border Patrol migrant processing facilities.

In late March, CBP released disturbing images of cramped conditions within one particular facility it runs in Donna, Texas - a mass of enormous white tents looming above the small town. The facility was designed to hold 250 people but housed more than 4,000 at peak occupancy.

Journalists have not been allowed to talk to the children inside. Instead we have been tracking down the children who have been released, to find out about conditions in US detention sites.

And then one day Cindy began to deteriorate and feel ill. She tested positive for Covid-19, as have a startling number of migrant children in detention. Health and Human Services (HHS) reports more than 3,000 coronavirus cases among migrant children in Texas alone since last year. It is not known what the total number of cases is in the new emergency detention sites around the country.

"House Democrats, who led an angry charge against the Trump administration's treatment of migrant children, have taken a much quieter tack since concerns began emerging about conditions at some of the emergency shelters set up by the Biden administration to deal with minors at the southern border," The New York Times reported Monday. Their reasoning, Democrats told the Times, is the Trump policies were deliberately cruel, while the Biden team, "trying hard to deal with a bad hand," will be receptive to backchannel worries from allies.

Maybe Democrats are right about this change of heart. The problem is the concrete circumstances of many unaccompanied migrant children continue to appall.

If we needed a reminder, a Monday report from Reason provides it. "More than 4,500 immigrant children and teens are being held in enormous, filthy tents on a military base in Texas without access to basic necessities, including underwear, ... medical care and physical safety," writes reporter C.J. Ciaramella. The magazine obtained access to secret recordings of a training for staff of the facility; in it, staff members say they are shorthanded, frustrated, and struggling with worker retention despite high pay. The trainer can be heard acknowledging cases of "staff with minors inappropriately" — the context suggests allegations of sexual assault — and describes a tent dorm as "dirty,"
with "wet spots all over the place."

Because of its location on military property, this camp "is not open to the public or press," and the Biden administration reportedly plans to expand it to hold up to 10,000 migrant minors. (There are about 20,000 migrant children — and counting — in government custody as of mid-May.)

Public interest in immigration reform is fading.

Yet if the mistreatment of migrant children deserved loud, relentless objection in the Trump years it deserves the same now. "Peace, peace," congressional Democrats say, when there is no peace.

'Heartbreaking' conditions in US migrant child camp
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-57561760

At a US border detention centre in the Texan desert, migrant children have been living in alarming conditions - where disease is rampant, food can be dangerous and there are reports of sexual abuse, an investigation by the BBC has found through interviews with staff and children.

In recent months, the US has seen a massive rise in migrants and asylum seekers from Central America. Violence, natural disasters and pandemic-related economic strife are some of the reasons behind the influx, experts say.

Some have also suggested the perception of a more lenient administration under Democrat Joe Biden has contributed to the crisis, though the White House has urged migrants against journeying to the US border.

The tented camp in the Fort Bliss military base in El Paso, Texas, is the temporary home for over 2,000 teenaged children who have crossed the US-Mexico border alone and are now awaiting reunification with family in the US.

Findings from the BBC's investigation include allegations of sexual abuse, Covid and lice outbreaks, a child waiting hours for medical attention, a lack of clean clothes and hungry children being served undercooked meat.

The BBC has spoken to camp employees about these conditions and seen photos and video smuggled out by staff.

From the BBC

They should send all of them to CALIFORNIA.

US immigration: Thousands gather under bridge at US-Mexico border in growing crisis
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-58593632

Some 10,000 migrants have gathered under a US-Mexico border bridge over recent days, leading to a growing humanitarian crisis.

The bridge connects Del Rio in Texas to Mexico's Ciudad Acuña and the temporary camp there has grown with staggering speed in recent days.

The mostly Haitian migrants, who have crossed the Rio Grande, are sleeping under the bridge in squalid conditions.

The US government has been facing a surge of migrants at the border.

Earlier this year, it was reported that the number of migrants detained at the US-Mexico border in July exceeded 200,000 for the first time in 21 years, government data shows.

And last month, the authorities arrested more than 195,000 migrants at the Mexican border, according to government data released on Wednesday.

What is Biden doing differently at US border?
Joe Biden's 'big problem' at the US border

The makeshift camp has few basic services, and migrants waiting in temperatures of 37C (99F) are said to be going back to Mexico to get supplies.

They are said to be mostly Haitians, with some Cubans, Venezuelans and Nicaraguans also present, reports say.

They appear to be part of a larger wave of Haitians heading north, many of whom arrived in Brazil and other South American nations after the 2010 earthquake, the Washington Post reports.

According to Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano, more than 10,500 migrants were under the Del Rio International Bridge as of Thursday evening, Reuters news agency reports.

Ramses Colon, a 41-year-old Afro-Cuban asylum seeker who worked in Peru to save money for the trip, said the Del Rio camp was "chaos".

"You stand there among thousands with your little ticket waiting for your turn," he told the Washington Post. Migrants have been given tickets with numbers while they wait to be processed.

It's all sad, but the problem has existed for many administrations, both Republican and Democratic. What is interesting is that Republicans like yourself who claimed Trump's approach worked and was reasonable and had no criticisms suddenly are criticizing the problem that he didn't fix for the last four years :). Look in the mirror and only cast stones if you don't live in glass houses.

I do not understand the inability (or perhaps the unwillingness) to comprehend the real aspects of this problem:
  • The US cannot solve this problem by taking in illegals aliens or legal immigrants. The numbers simply don't work. Economic ruin, societal failure, food and water shortages, and environmental damage for the United States are the ultimate consequences of this course of action. https://www.numbersusa.org/#
  • National security concerns are real. Do you not believe that ISIS, the Chinese, all our enemies wouldn't use this crisis to put terrorists and sleeper agents into the country?
  • This just enables human trafficking.

Trump's policies were working. It's clear that President Potato Head has no clue.

"Do you not believe that ISIS, the Chinese, all our enemies wouldn't use this crisis to put terrorists and sleeper agents into the country?"

99.9999999% of these refugees speak Spanish, and there is no way of completely avoiding terrorists from entering the country on visitor visas, as did all of the 9/11 terrorists. Completely closing our borders is neither feasible nor desirable. The reason Trump's policies were working were that they were instituted over the years of the Bush and Obama administrations. Trump was ignoring intelligence reports and threatening to undermine the very policies that kept us safe for 15 years before that numbskull entered office.

By the way, raise your hand if your great grandparents came over on the Mayflower :). Most of us are recent descendants of refugees/immigrants. We need some immigration if only to provide refugees from totalitarian regimes with some place safe to live, and someone to pick our crops, clean our toilets and other jobs no American is willing to take at this point in time. Zero immigration is not a feasible or humane policy. And it won't work anyway.

Sorry Neil. Throwing up your hands and saying there's nothing to be done is just wrong.

The myth that this nation's resources are endless is extremely foolish and unrealistic. A nation without borders is no longer sovereign. Period.

Saying that most of us were recent immigrants is ridiculous and irrelevant. By the way, from 1925 to 1965, the United States had NO immigration. The point of that measure was to assimilate immigrants and give them time to become Americans. You know, "E pluribus unum"?

And America does not have a zero immigration policy anyway (and no one suggested that). But what we do need is:
  • Enforcement of the laws already on the books
  • A non-porous national border to cut down or eliminate drug and people smuggling
  • Stop giving amnesties and encouraging illegals to come here
  • Mandated use of eVerify which will shut off the jobs magnet

All of these are realistic, achievable, effective, and yes humane ways of dealing with the crisis at the Southern border.

Hand-wringing isn't going to cut it.

While this is going on we will also be taking in 95,000 Afghanistan refugees for resettlement.

The Afghans are coming into the U.S. in the wake of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which sparked an exodus of Afghans from Kabul as they fled the Taliban. Officials have said those coming in are made up of those who worked directly with the U.S. mission as well with thousands of others deemed "at risk."

California (5,255) and Texas (4,481) will receive the largest numbers of the first wave, while smaller populated states like Oklahoma and Missouri will receive 1,800 and 1,200 respectively. Michigan, Florida and Georgia will both receive more than 1,000 Afghans each. New York will receive 1,143 and Arizona will receive 1,610.

However, Washington D.C., along with Hawaii, South Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming, will not receive any refugees in the initial wave.

The State Department works with nine resettlement agencies and 200 affiliates across the country – in addition to State Refugee Coordinators – to assess state capacity. The organizations identify communities where Afghans can move to, and the government also works with the Afghans themselves to work out where they may already have family members living in the U.S. or where there are already established Afghan-American communities.

It is the first wave of what White House officials have said will be 95,000 refugees in the first fiscal year. The intention is to bring in 65,000 immediately and another 30,000 over the next year, officials told reporters on a recent call. It has also made a $6.4 billion request for funding related to resettlement, and the ability to give green cards to those paroled.

Dr Neil probably has them cleaning his house, fixing the mulch beds and mowing the grass because he’s to cheap to pay an American wage. All the while he feels better helping people of color. Remember with Dr Dumberg it’s all about ones skin color. Well that and power and control which is why we have open borders. The Democratic Party wouldn’t exist without a permanent underclass of people. The borders are open so the Democrats have future voters. They can’t win elections on novel ideas.

Makes you wonder. If we staid away from Afghanistan and spent that 20 years in Mexico. Use those 20 years and billions. Trying to install the government we want in Afghanistan into Mexico. Clean up Mexico. Get rid of drug lords. Then bring our manufacturing back from china. Move it into Mexico. Would Mexico be a better place? Would there citizens want to stay.
For what it is worth. It is easier for terrorist to come in from Canada.

Migrants in Texas: Thousands moved to processing centres
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-58612566

US officials have moved thousands of migrants away from a Texas border town that has seen an influx of mostly Haitian migrants over the past week.

More than 10,000 people have gathered under a bridge connecting Del Rio in Texas to Mexico's Ciudad Acuña.

Local officials have struggled to provide them with enough food or services.

Some 2,000 people were moved to immigration and processing stations on Friday.

The US government says it plans to fly the migrants back to where they began their journeys.

Flights are expected to start on Sunday, with the US currently negotiating returns with the countries in question.

The Department for Homeland Security said in a statement that the transfers will continue "in order to ensure that irregular migrants are swiftly taken into custody, processed and removed from the United States consistent with our laws and policy".

It added that US Customs and Border Protection is sending 400 additional agents to Del Rio, a city with a population of roughly 35,000.

Del Rio's Mayor Bruno Lozano has declared a state of emergency, and described the situation as "unprecedented" and "surreal". He said border patrol had been overwhelmed and that "agitated" migrants were living in impossible conditions.

The US government has been facing a surge of migrants at the border this year.

The number of migrants detained at the US-Mexico border in July exceeded 200,000 for the first time in 21 years, according to government data.
