What happened when a city disbanded its police force

Camden, New Jersey, created a brand new police force to forge better ties with its residents.
Their aim was for the police to be guardians, not warriors of their community.
The city used to have one of the highest crime rates in the United States but now, eight years later, it is seeing its lowest crime rate in 50 years.
I can't imagine what it was like 50 years ago compared to today ?

50? 30 years ago it was a place to be avoided at all costs.
The owls may indeed not be what they seem but still serve an imperative function: they remind us to look into the darkness.

Still is.
Re: Camden, New Jersey,
Camden saved millions by dumping their police force. Without an active police force. NJ state troopers took over. People try to make it sound as Camden went not watched. It was heavily watched. Camden was financially broke. They had no money to pay officers and nobody wanted to work for free
After several years of state police protection Camden brought back a new police force. It was all about saving money. Not changing policing culture.
On a side note Philly cut their police budget by 30 million. Then moved some of the savings to the School district of Philadelphia. Philly used active police officers as school crossing guards. They axed that position. Saving a ton. Then gave the money to the school district and said " hire your own crossing guards"
