Item 1 was a problem for me. I let my passport expire years ago, and didn't have an original of my birth-certificate. Had to go to the local health department and get them to run down/print me a new birth certificate. If you think the lines at the MVA are painful, you should see the ones at the health department. In Maryland you can get an appointment at the MVA, which is a free pass to the head of the line. But if I was still a working stiff, the whole thing would have been a PITA.

My first 2 or 3 fishing trips into Canada, '06, '07, and I think '08, I only needed my picture driver license and birth certificate, but then they were requiring a passport. Now, I don't remember what year it was, maybe '08 or '09, I had already gotten a Passport Card, which is the size of our Pa. driver license but all the information on is is encrypted. So, we're gettin' ready to leave early on a Friday morning, and the Steelers were playin' a Thursday night game, so while watchin' the game, I'm packin'. And now I can't find the card. I was up all night. My wife said I was the one who had it last; I said I'd given it to her to file away for the next year. We tore this house apart. I went through every drawer, (twice), went through our file cabinet several times, through our safety box, and could not find that card. So, at 5:30 in the morning when Big Jim showed up to pick us up, I had to watch my two boys load their gear and watched them drive away. Not only was I disgusted, I was somewhat heart broken. 10"00 AM, the phone rings (Roger callin' from the border), and he asks me "How long will it take you to get up here?" He said that Canadian customs was not yet enforcing the passport rule, and the driver licence and birth certificate would suffice. (I wouldn't want to show them my concealed carry card, lest they tear my truck apart lookin' for a weapon). I loaded my truck, showered and boogied. I was about 5 hours behind them and met them at the motel we stay at before we go into the camp. The difference between a passport card and a regular passport is that you can only drive to Canada or Mexico with the card. You cannot fly. The card is now gone, and you must have a regular passport.
BTW, the old girl found the card in her jewelry box before I got home.

Passport Card can be used for boat travel to Bermuda and the Caribbean as well as Canada and Mexico. You must use a passport if you fly.

You will also need to get a Real ID card come October for domestic air travel as well (or use a Passport or Passport card).

It may not be important to some but I think the "REAL" drivers license/ID will be needed to vote or board a plane.

This whole thing with Real ID will be BS anyway because California issues drivers license to illegals and with Senate Bill 60 was signed by former Governor Gray Davis, they will be able to obtain a real ID. All the terrorist will be able to get a real ID in California. Calif democrats don't give a $hit about the rest of the country or our safety.
