New York City In 1911

Surreal Old Timey Film Of New York City In 1911
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXRnGwbrnOo

I started this thread because I didn't want to sidetrack Rufus's thread.

How fast we advanced with the discovery of oil and gas with the invention of the internal combustion engine.

The wheel was invented somewhere around 3500 BC. The first automobile was around 1985. In the New York City video of 1911 horse drawn wagons and buggy's are still in use. What is amazing is how fast we have advanced in a little over a hundred years. Like what Murph posted with his picture.

In Pennsylvania Amish country, they haven't succumbed to the automobile and electricity. They do it the old fashioned way.

Well, if the first automobile was around 1985...........

Yet, the Amish are better informed than the average person and also use cell phones. Perhaps their choices have more to say than they are credited.

I don't see any catenary, so those trollies must be powered by an internal combustion engine. Surely the track wouldn't have been electrified, entirely too dangerous. What?

Buried third rail. Look at 2'20" into video. There is a slotted guard midway between the outer running rails. A "dagger board" shoe slips down between those guards to make contact with the submerged hot rail buried in the street.
Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

I saw inside 3rd rail that I think is underground, outside 3rd rail and overhead trolleys.
The autos all seem to be right hand drive.
I was surprised by the number of unaccompanied ladies.
IMO a very interesting film.

I always heard it called a "plow".

Yes, "plow". Some of these were based on cable car systems where the cable was removed and replaced by the third rail. Some units were dual capable, side third rail or trolley wire. Some had gasoline generators for locations that had no source of external electricity.
