...and you are a pleasure to have a conversation with, Nev. I believe it when you say you are cool. You are.

It's just silly cold this AM:

Hopefully Sarge's robins are hunkered down somewhere a bit warmer...

Yet the our feathered visitors are flying about this morning tidying up from yesterdays church social to the gods of robin gluttony.

Re: Northern weather
Okay, that's crazy cold for around here! The prematurely-arrived robins have polished off all of the crab-apples on the two trees out front, eaten all of the berries off the American holly (ilex opaca), and now are working the berries on the Japanese holly (ilex crenata) out back. I'm not sure what to do for them after that's gone.
Re: Northern weather
Last year the cold-snap lasted weeks, and happened twice if I remember right. This one is due to break into the 40s F by Tuesday, so not as brutal by duration, anyway.
Meanwhile, the hollies (one is about 60' tall, the other 45' or so) still look like the social centre of the robin universe here:

They are messy about it, especially when they feast by the hundreds:

Only bird that I've heard (not seen...) was a bright and very early visitation from my friendly neighborhood woodpecker this morning.....

Re: Northern weather
Speaking of keeping MTJ great, has anybody besides me suffered through a "concert" by a "dude" and company named, BORNS ? I have to ask , though I can't quite figure out why (or why you should care, either), whathehump is wrong with him, or is his raging self-indulgence and Narcissism so virulent as to be nauseating to the unwary and unprepared ? Eh? Huh? Talk about posers.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but, I believe I'd rather watch a clown.
Is that a bad thing?

Another bout of heat for Perth
Perth has finally cooled down to about average summer levels over the last few days, and is on track to heat up to a balmy 32 degrees today.
However, the heat will make a return from the start of the working week, when temperatures will rise to the mid-to-high 30's across city. On Tuesday, Perth has the potential to reach 40 degrees.
This may be the eighth day this summer that the metro area has reach 40 degrees or above. Previously, the record for summer was six days, most recently in 1998.
The Fremantle Doctor will provide little if any relief during the afternoons - a strong high pressure ridge is making sure of that. Although cooler winds will arrive on Wednesday 17th, it will still be a hot day with a forecast maximum of 36 degrees.
Even as the sun sets, it will still remain quite hot each evening from Monday to Wednesday; the lowest it will ever get is about 21 degrees, most likely just before sunrise. This means that around midnight, it could still be in the mid-to-high 20's.
The hot, dry easterly winds that are bringing this spike in temperatures and preventing seabreezes will bring an increase in fire danger for the Perth region, potentially to very high or severe levels.
From Thursday and towards the weekend, it will be noticeably cooler, but still lingering in the low

Nev,
Sounds as if your summer temps are similar to ours.

Re: Northern weather
Day Three of this annual event opens with temps slowly climbing and snow falling (soon to be replaced with sleet then rain). The visitors are now cleaning up that what litters the drive and the ground under the holly trees with great enthusiasm:

On the trees themselves, not a berry remains. Job Done!

You'll perhaps pardon the crap photos, shot through the porch windows with the flash off on a gray and gloomy morning. The sound, however is a cheerful one. Holly leaves have been liberally distributed all over the grounds, and my wife's car shall we say bears the fruit of the robin's labours in many spots...

Never heard of him.

How about a somewhat overweight cat?

Never. Just remember to never touch the clowns; let the the clowns touch you.

What's TV? I keep a stack of books from the library at the one end of the fireplace hearth next to the recliner.....
BTW, a good 2+" here in VA and some pretty steady snow coming down right now - they called for 1-3" and and another 3-5" to day before changing to ice and then rain. Tomorrow has all the hallmarks of being a total frelling mess.
No robins, nothing on the holly bushes (tree), some rabbit tracks out front, and a lot of white and quiet. I like it. Fire in the fireplace again this afternoon/evening and hopefully with the ice/sleet/rain we do not lose power. Then again, we lose power, the alarms fail, the garage door doesn't open, and I stay home even faster. Yup. I work with this alright.

Re: Northern weather
Barely snowing here, maybe an inch. Looking forward to the sleet and freezing rain this evening...should make the nightly news that much more entertaining.
The Downy woodpeckers have been working over the suet feeder pretty well the last few days, while the Juncos scratch around underneath for the debris:

The squirrels have finally given up trying to crack open the suet feeder. Once I hid my goggles for the acetylene torch they pretty much ran out of options.
Hunkering down by the fire sounds like a good idea.
