This is an odd but true story. Life can be very strange sometimes.

Pete, great bit about the fireflies (lightning bugs—I never know which word I prefer). We got to get over to your land one summer before it's too late. If we're allowed (invited).

Twenty five years later someone (Irene) shows up to tell you the rest of the story. That is kind of eerie.

I wonder if Bobby Brown ever learned to play pool?

I remember the saga of Bobby Brown and the $20 kid from 2005 in the Jungle (went and searched to confirm I wasn't delusional). Good to see it get published in Waldo County Opinions. Now if we can hear the story of Irene...

If only we had fireflies here on the left coast. http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2872/why-arent-there-any-fireflies-in-california

Tramp,

I thought that story and those characters were fiction.I read some stories written by some guy from Maine about very similar incidents.I enjoyed that writing and enjoyed this also.

re: the fireflies...
It must be a function of it having been so incredibly wet all Spring, that the fireflies have had not only an abundance of forage, but plenty of place to roost/hide. There are places when I wade out into my fields that it's fully chest-high. My poor Super-A, it's going to be the devil to get it mown. I'm going to have to make half-passes, and only mow on the downhill. I've been mowing around the periphery, and there's been places where it wanted to bog.
But those fireflies! I've never remotely seen them like this. You guys are going to think I'm sh*tting you, but they are absolutely non-stop over the breadth of the field and up both length of trees on either side. Nothing short of stunning. I'm enjoying it while it lasts, because I don't expect I'll ever see it like this again.

Pete, I need a photo of those fireflies. I'd love to show my mom. I know it might not come out, but please, if you have the time, give it a try.

Oh, I've seen both the moths and the glow worms in North Carolina, maybe that's "up north"!

Roger,

Never thought of lightning bugs as a northern thing. Here in the Atlanta area I have been seeing them in my backyard every evening lately. Also when I lived down in Jacksonville, FL we had them all the time during the summer months.
