Re: Menard's First Locomotive

To judge from the OGR postings, the Menards F-whatever is shoody goods. It is rather rich to charge hobbyists $150 to be beta testers of such an unrefined effort. If the Lion coughed up a fir ball like this, they would be skinned alive. Everyone likes a bargain, but price isn't everything. Let's hope...

Re: Menard's First Locomotive

We might add, Neil, that the entry level trains from Lionel, Gilbert, and (earlier) Marx were made with a decent level of integrity. Those trains still run (or can be easily made to run) 70 years later. In the day, Lionel and Flyer had parts and networks of service stations. Price alone is not the o...

Re: Lionel Buys MTH Tooling

The only inkling of a former MTH tool being used in the new Vol2 Lionel 2021 catalog is the C-Liner? I went to the MTH web site and pulled this line out of THEIR announcement of the sale: The combined sale of the Atlas, Scale Trains and now Lionel purchases still leaves approximately 80% of the M.T...

Re: Menard's First Locomotive

Gee, notice that they are up to 14 pages (at this writing) of fawning over another piece of cheap China-made “stuff” on OGR. Yes, that F-whatever unit is affordable, but it is cosmetically and operationally highly compromised. There is not the parts inventory and service support for the units that h...

Re: Atlas/MTH Trains

$450 for 44T switcher..... Is that good? It's more than what a decent scale brass 44T costs and about double what my current one cost me. Generally, the 44 Tonners from MTH were available for $400. I have a first issue LIRR version (as does a friend who has a PRR version). These are die cast and ve...

Re: Scale Trains buys MTH HO/S tooling

My, my. This thread sure has wandered far afield from the OP's post. The topic was the disposition of MTH's HO and S tooling, locomotive models derived from which will be controlled via DCC or conventionally. By the way, the tooling for both is very good. Neither DCS nor Mike's personality ha...

Re: You Can Do It! TM's new train repair video.

A suggestion: Purchase an external disk drive and plug it into a laptop. One can be plugged into my MS Surface. An iPad is another issue.

Good luck.

Re: You Can Do It! TM's new train repair video.

Thanks for the heads up. Will start looking for it. A good video is worth its weight in gold. Any chance they will start doing a digital download or possibly an on-demand streaming version, like a subscription service. I understand there is the issue of copy protection and additional workload but I...

You Can Do It! TM's new train repair video.

With the continuing disappearance of model train repair stations, the timing is ripe for new, clearly presented how-to videos for toy and model train maintenance performed by the hobbyist at home. In this new TM Video, “You Can Do It! Part 1”, the instruction and narration is given by Bob Phillips w...

Re: Another Aldafer auction.

Looks like a reasonable auction of some trains. Expect a lot of this sort of activity now and in the future.

Spelled 'Alderfer' by the by.

Re: aldafer's auction

This appears to be a perfectly reasonable auction. The trains are displayed well and the prices realized make sense in today's market. In full disclosure, Alderfer Auctions helped to sell a large number of non-train items of my mother's a year and a half ago and they did a friendly, professional job...

Re: TrainWorld LionChief Plus A-5 steam engines on sale

There is a K-Line A-5 on eBay for even less. Cab 913 has TMCC. Cab 94 is conventional. I upgraded by TMCC A-5 with ERR Cruise. Its a sweet runner and I think sounds better than the Lionchief engine. Electro couplers on both ends too. <snip> Pete I own a K-Line A5 (PRR ... no dash, BTW) Cab No. 913 ...

Re: American Flyer misinformation

You're always helpful, Bob. On my three 1946-47 Hudsons with the boiler slot, there is a small blind hole right behind the steam dome. It's not on 1948 and later shells. Would this hole be for the prewar remote directional control? Yes. The small blind hole is a positioning point for drilling a sma...
