Signing in here

Postby bob turner » Thu Feb 09, 2023 1:33 pm

Martin posted two links on how to do it. I cannot find them, but this new forumite apparently was successful:

The sign-up process for MTJ does indeed work now. I was finally able to log in yesterday, after trying (off and on) for a couple years.

So, please - how about a "step-by-step" process so OGR rejects can join us?

So the routine means of joining seems to have been activated. I suppose you click on the Register tab....and step through the process.

That's correct, the standard sign-up method seems to work now. I received an "Account activated" email a couple days after signing up.

Outstanding and thank you for confirming, and welcome to MTJ, too.

Great. Now we need a tutorial on how to post photos - yes, we have done it before, but it can be challenging to newbies:

My current favorite is Shutterfly - they treat me really well, considering I am a free loader. I would happily pay for prints, but cannot reverse crop my high aspect ratio locomotive images. They chop half the boiler and the other half of the tender, to my dismay.

But here it is - get an account (free) load photos (free). Then click on the photo you want - there is a little box over on the right, and the second thing you see is a circle with a plus sign. Click there.

Then right-click on the resulting enlarged photo - a box will appear. fourth item down is the image address. Just left click that.

You are all set - all you do is go to the Img box above -9th from the left - click that, do a "paste" (on my Dell it is a Control V) and you are done! Click "submit."

Like this:

the %20 symbol above is the forum's way of trying without success to find my image - just read the words and assume spaces where you see that.

Image

In Loopie's case, the computer found this between the img symbols, and was able to grab and post her image:

https://uniim1.shutterfly.com/render/00 ... 1675137668

I could easily have simply typed the img symbols myself - the forum makes it easy with the button. Hit the button, paste.

Resizing and cropping photos prior to uploading to hosting services such as Shutterfly or whichever you choose is actually quite easy.

While I do that using Photoshop, you can do this using Paint, or any one of several free on-line services such as:

I will try Paint. Most of my attempts resulted in images ready for their photo services - what I need is for Shutterfly to support such cropping. We will print the cat photos, since they are standard aspect ratio, but sadly my photo albums remain berift, since I converted to digital.

Resizing is not cropping but Smugmug supports an array of sizing choices. I have not found that cropping is necessary using Smugmug. I do however make all photos to a standard of my choice for posting on forums.

I switched to Flickr a few years ago after the Shutterfly extortion episode. It's been a good experience, and as I approach my 1000 image limit for a free account, I'll likely go ahead and pay for a subscription.

I use MS Paint for resizing/editing, but occasionally use Photos for straightening, adjusting brightness, and filtering. Between the two, one can do most of the basic things required to produce a nice image. They are both very powerful, yet fairly simple and intuitive to use. I suspect Photoshop is much more powerful, but I haven't found much I wanted to do that I couldn't with Paint and Photos.

Shutterfly has yet to attempt extortion - I feel kinda guilty. They are asking for a purchase every 18months, even a very small one. I can do that - I tried to get some hard copies of locomotives. I let them keep my six bucks, even though they admitted they could not print such high aspect photos and offered my $ back.

One of our potential posters who is interested in Lobaugh cannot get in, because the system says his e-mail is already in use. There should be a way to re-capture an old sign-in.

I suggested the easy way - a new e-mail account. They are still free, right?

I guess they got religion after the pay-or-else edict a few years back. I can't remember what their new terms/conditions were, but it was not inexpensive. With so many alternatives available, I figured that model would never work and apparently it didn't. I'm not particularly interested in a free-ride, but $29.95/month, or whatever it was, was a non-starter. A single nominal purchase annually certainly seems more than reasonable.

One thing I've noticed about Flickr is that if someone purchases a print of a photo in my repository, none of that comes back to me. Maybe that's one of their vehicles for making the model work. The money's gotta come from somewhere; it doesn't bother me one bit.

Healy - unless you have signed a release, they cannot simply print your photos and sell them to others.

If you're talking about someone who wants to register here and they are getting a message that their email is already in use, please PM me the email address they're trying to use and I'll see if I can figure out a work around.
