Actually, this [using compressed air to store energy - web] is old art - I have seen a local Amish setup that used a 16' waterpump type windmill(has the high torque necessary for the compressor) running a good sized air compressor (via power coupling that, unfortunately, I have no record of). He used a railroad tank car (!) as an air tank reservoir, and ran everything on a regular sized dairy farm in Lancaster Co. with the system, with a diesel compressor backup. Therefore, such a system can be made to work, altho there must be limitations.

Hi Wayne, Thanks for the input! From what you have just explained, would it be appropriate (obligatory?) to have a windmill next to a shed that contained a water pump/well/compressor facility ?

I understand by your use of italics that you were quoting from the article ( from "K3CZ.") Yet, I had to wonder if you were talking, also, from personal experience in PA. You certainly seem to have considerable personal knowledge, so I wasn't about to underestimate you.

Some of the Amish are using wind mills but not to many. With the air system setup this is what they are turning too.
As far as the power unit it has it's own shed where it it housed. You could also use a pole type barn to house your unit too. Don't forgit to run the exhaust either out the top of the roof or you could also run it off the side of the building. Don't want fumes in there.........................

As far as the Twister movie that could have been an old hand operated water pump they were tied too. I'd have to see the movie again.

No lamps Murph Man. The Old Order do not have lamps on the house or barn. They have hooks where they can hang there lanterns.They just light up there lanterns with white kerosene and do what they have to do.

Yup! that's about the size of that. If they bought a house that had electric hooked up they tend to have it disconnected as well where I am. Contamination issues!

OTOH, they ysed to keep a TV locked in the closet that they ran off a generator out back so they could watch the news......

Now the New Order Amish do have electric lights on there barns and houses just like us English people do.

Ok, I'm lost here....not heard of New Order Amish. Over where I am you either are or you aren't and there's nothing new about it....

I have no personal knowlege of things Pennsylvania. Everything I know I learned from Hev.

Regarding, "...appropriate (obligatory?)... ...windmill...": K3CZ only reported knowledge of one such set-up. Hev's report that "Some of the Amish are using wind mills but not to many." should be your guide.

I gather as much from the name -- just never seen any or known of any in my part of PA.

OTOH, the Mennonites in my area have been using cars, phones, electrical, etc for as long as I can remember.

Hev, WHOA!! I'm betting that bad boy rules the barnyard!

Roger, it's a 'treehouse' I built for the kids, against the tree, the redhead having ruled out something higher up in the branches, (and there was to be no negotiation about it). Even the windows had to be sufficiently small to prevent small bodies fitting through.
It's a two-story, with an inner vertical ladder that goes up through a trapdoor that drops to become part of the 2nd story floor. The upper story has fold-down benches/table.

The kids have outgrown it. Our Perimeter Defense System (the puma) now uses it to help spot birds, rabbits, squirrels, mice, voles, and future deer-bologna.
We're thinking of dropping it down, dragging it over by the poleshed, and converting it into a chicken coop.

Shame though. It's a huge and beautiful green ash, and we could have had us one bitchin' tree house waaaay up!

Or donate it to another kid that will enjoy it as much as yours did.

But there is always practicality and it becomes a coop.
