Check this GP-7 out. I used to ride behind this very engine #1501 from Beaver Pa. to Pittsburgh Pa. in the late 60's or early 70's but it was the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad then. It used to go to Pittsburgh in the early am and return at 5:00 PM. It is now being stored by the OCS. Can't believe its still around. Used to have 3 coaches and the engine. Also when I rode behind it, it was painted up with New York Central System lighting stripes livery.

AND NOW... THE REST OF THE STORY

"Lunch on the Skyscraper" was taken by Charles C. Ebbets on September 29. 1932 on the then in-construction RCA Building at Rockefella Center in New York 800 feet above ground, on the 69th floor of the 70 story building.

The Image is part of the Bettmann file, founded by Otto Bettmann in 1936. At present time the Bettmann file belongs to the Corbis Company, property of Bill Gates.

The RCA Building was renamed as the GE Building in 1988, two years after General Electric re-acquired the RCA Corporation. The building now has a big illuminated "GE" on top.


The GE Building is the narrow one in the center of this photo.

The Rainbow Room is in the GE (RCA) building. The Rainbow Room, as reported right here in the Jungle, announced on January 4, 2009 that it would no longer operate as a restaurant due to the economic downturn.

And that completes the circle back to the Jungle.

Great pictures guys, and great history lesson. Some day I'll have to post some pics I bought of the Orange Belt Railway, a 1890's narrow gauge railway that ran from Tampa bay (literally) to Sanford FL. The railway extended out on a pier about a half mile into Tampa Bay from St. Petersburg. Anyone familiar with the geography of West Florida will know that the land is flat, ergo, the water is shallow. The pier needed to be that long so the larger fishing schooners could be pulled up to the pier and off loaded. The railway then wound its way through St. Pete, up through Clearwater and Tarpon Springs, then turned east to Sanford. At its busiest, there were 6 trains a day, 2 mixed freight and 4 passenger.

Although Sanford was the end of the line, the last turntable was in Monroe, 2 miles away. Here trains were turned and backed into Sanford. Another turntable, along with a freight house, passenger station, and service facility existed in St. Petersburg, along with a run out on the pier. It is this end of the line that I would like to model some day (aside from the GTW, of course.)

The Orange Belt Railway owned mostly 4-4-0s, mostly Baldwin, but some National, Pittsburgh Loco Works, and Brooks. They also owned one small Mogul.

So I scratched up my 20 bucks for the Snow White DVD and barely made it half way across the Walmart parking lot before being rolled by two bag ladies. Some days a fella just shouldn't get out of bed.
