Shipping is something painful. Try looking up on the USPS shipping calculator what it costs. It's educational. I try to keep shipping costs down but decent boxes and packing materials are not free, and that trip over to the PO is not fress e. Only good thing at the PO is that I can generally use the self-serve system to avoid spending 20-30 minutes in line.

I agree with all you say, but sadly it doesn't help.

As for shipping, I pretty much quit selling as the shipping cost were too much and buyers complained. Then my wife informed me we have a Stamps.com account....which she uses for stamps.

I've found I can ship UPS, Fed-X or USPS via this account for around half of what it cost to walk in a carriers office and especially the boutique mailing/shipping stores located everywhere. The last two boxes would have been $20-25 using the the normal shipping way, but Stamps.com was $10 on one and $12 on the other. That is a big savings.

Now, you do have to ship enough to make it worth the $20 monthly fee to have this account, but if you ship very much it pays for itself over and over.

I've also learned that a company called "Pirate Ship" is good for larger boxes like car parts, etc.

I've had an EB account since 1998, back when it was a great place to sell. But, the last time I sold (few years ago) they asked for my SS# and said they had to notify the IRS of any combined sales over $600 a year. Maybe not a big deal and maybe not their fault, but it really chaps my *ss they want/have to do that, so I quit selling there.

Yard sale is hit or miss and a much smaller audience, so I think I'll have to bite the bullet and start selling my excess trains on EB again. :(

You can thank Congress for that.....and all the states that wanted their cut of the pie in 2019.

You either sell it, or it gathers dust, or you lug it around to show after show..... But as I have pointed out to the guys that bring the same tired stuff to Strasburg for 2-5 years (or more  ) that won't drop anything on eBay due to taxes, that they really do not want to sell their stuff - taxes, technically, sales at train shows qualify as income....

I've never had any complaint on shipping costs. BTW, if you get your shipping label through eBay it comes at a substantial discount,
And, I do check in advance what the USPS will charge me to ship everything - that web site is very useful!

I do have to wonder about the audience size there and it seems there are a limited number of sellers there (some that lack communication skills)....

Wife is shipping some items to her sister and just printed off the label. OKC to KC area. 24"x17"x13" and 28lbs. Shipped for 23.64. I know the local drop off store would be $60-75.

I'll be back on EB as the items just aren't selling on YS. I've had really good luck on YS over the past year, as long as it's an item of interest and priced right (low).

That is everywhere today and you have to watch spell check and other AI, as it will change the spelling or substitute a word that completely changes the meaning of a sentence.

Big boxes cost more!!! Try shipping that to the east coast and feel the pain! Last box I shipped out this week went to the west coast....yikes!

Definitely agree on big boxes. I'm so tired of seeing "dimensional" charges added in for boxes that used to be considered standard. I sent some aluminum valve covers to Australia last fall. Weight was minimal, but dimensional charges applied. The shipping store wanted just over $250 to ship via USPS, so I walked away. I took it to the local post office 10 minutes later and guess what..........$133 and change. Certainly opened my eyes. I know these convenience shipping stores need to make a profit, but almost doubling the cost is obscene.

It's space in an airplane; if it's being trucked 1/2 way across the country it's not very expensive. When it gets on a plane, double and more....

Challenge for us is we're shipping models that are fragile - double boxing and packing all around times 2 and the outer box grows in size to be expensive. Buyers need to understand how this works and that shipping is not what it was in the 70's'.....unless they want damaged models and then that's our problem again....

Bob T recommended I try Shippo and he was right on. The shipping is about half the price in contrast to using the UPS website. I can drop the item off at any UPS store after I print the label. They offer other carriers, but I have not tried them.

They do not have a monthly fee, and will find the cheapest way. You just tap on the version you want, print a label, and take it to the postal annex store. They then give it to USPS or UPS or FedEx, depending on what you selected.

I think I mentioned Gersh's Challenger - $70 to get here, $23 to ship it back. Go Shippo!

No monthly fee is great, but since my wife will not get rid of the Stamps.com account, I guess I'm good.

Do you have to sign up and have an account with Shippo...just no fees? Do you pay Shippo directly or do you pay when you take it the carrier?
