LOL; in my defense, I try to use incoming boxes that haven't been beat to Hades, but I'll fess up to occasionally taking one or two of the larger ones when visiting the local P. O.

They are made of some really strong, thin corrugated...terrific stuff to work with.

Good quality boxes are a treasure. Dislike having to buy them but when I need another 50 for homes for models, it pays to not be too frugal.

Managed to part with 11 of 50 at cost at the last Strasburg meet.

Congratulations on a successful campaign. The march to the Oval Office has to start somewhere!

Congratulations, and I sympathize with you concerning the can of worms about to be opened.

Swung by the indoor flea market this morning to see what could be recovered. Not too much, it turns out; mostly over-priced junk, but then I guess that's what you'd find at a flea market.

Did find this Lesney Matchbox #56 London trolley bus for a couple bucks:

Lots of playwear, it's one I've not seen before. Otherwise, the place was a desert.

Neat, but it does raise the question of where to buy Peardrax,

Too far,  but ordering and all is a possibility.

This is already beginning to be as complicated as when I wanted some Aachen liquor....... :? :?

Laying around the house, sick as a dog (no offense to the retrievers). Grinding ahead on the tunnel project, pasted in some paper webbing to help with the paper mâché application:

Image

Lionel used glue-soaked felt for some of their big tunnels in the prewar era, and the postwar #920 Scenic Display Set came with a big piece of felt, two tunnel portals, powdered glue, a bunch of other scenic supplies, and detailed instructions on how to build a tunnel similar to those made two decades earlier. I think this set was sold for one year only (1957), speaking to the complexity of building it.

The Elastolin tunnels made both before and after the war used paper mâché as covering. It's something I'm familiar with, and it gives a decent result if you're looking for something that looks of-the-era. You get a lot of sagging if you don't support it as you build the shell. My solution, not perfect by any means, is to add some lightweight webbing between the partitions.

American Flyer made their prewar tunnels out of paper mâché composed of ground paper/wood fiber soaked with glue. They must have used a mold to form them, as there's no interior framework other than a metal hoop used to reinforce the "portal". Back in the early days of collecting this stuff, I'd occasionally see these tunnels in the antique stores, not realizing they were made by the company. It's a wonder that any of them have survived.

Anyway, I'll let this dry thoroughly before the next step - applying the paper mâché, a process only slightly less messy than applying the glitter
