The opposition to Tony Fauci and public health measures such as masks comes from ignoramuses and nincompoops driven by their ideology, nothing to do with science, however imperfect. It's amazing to me that people will follow political leaders who are entirely ignorant and not very bright. Their loyalty is based upon their ideology. Ignorance, incompetence and rejection of science have become core values of a significant proportion of our population, primarily associated with the Republican party and religious fanatics. The religious fanatics have always been with us, but this degree of stupidity amongst a major political party is a new "thing."

Some parents in my school district are passing around a petition. They want to have segregated classes for vaxed and nonvaxed kids. If people are vaccinated why do the worry about being around unvaccinated people? They want these segregated classes for all grades.

The rejections kept coming. The coronavirus was a topic of intense scientific fascination, yet the four Australian researchers challenging conventional wisdom about how the pandemic originated couldn’t find a publisher for their study.

“We were quite stunned,” recalls one of that study’s authors, Dr. Nikolai Petrovsky, an endocrinologist at Flinders University in Australia who is also developing a coronavirus vaccine. The work he and his group had done only received what he called “blanket rejections.”

That finally changed late last month, when Nature Scientific Reports published their paper, “In silico comparison of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein-ACE2 binding affinities across species and implications for virus origin.”

As for origin of the current coronavirus, I haven't read the literature in detail because it's extremely unlikely that definitive proof will become available one way or the other. Doesn't matter. It's not exactly news that new coronaviruses arise that kill lots of people. Just this time, it was a really large number of people, and the public health response was somewhat bungled both in China and elsewhere. This was a largely new clinical phenomenon so not that surprising. What was surprising to me was the totally wrongheaded discouraging of masks early on. Complete idiocy, however well intentioned. From March of 2000 I told my staff to wear masks if they could find them. Ignore the CDC's and WHO's advice, which was clearly wrong to many of us back then as now. Being wrong isn't a sin. I've certainly made mistakes for individual patients and on policy decisions in the 45+ years since getting my MD. True of all of us.

And 70 million Americans were wrong last November . Voting for a man who is a verifiable monster with no human feelings and not much of a brain. Who then proceeded to screw the nation to an extent with his politically motivated idiotic advice. We're still living with his moronic refusal to wear a mask and turning a public health measure into a sign of loyalty to Der Trumpster. At least the miserable loser SOB did get the vaccine effort supported, I grant him that. But the origins of the virus will remain a mystery no doubt, and it doesn't matter all that much. Although the possibility of a lab origin is a good argument against research of "gain of function" mutations for micro-organisms which attempt to make them more virulent. Probably too dangerous to undertake.
