Building pretty much pancaked when it collapsed. Pile is lot higher than it looks; deceptive on the screen.

Oh,there was a sink hole?

Speculation. The amount of material that should have been at the base of the building seems small considering the size of the former structure. It had to go somewhere. It could be there WAS an underground garage and the material collapsed into it.

Just read that that building was known to be very slowly "settling" for many years.

Picture of the missing part.

It looks like parts of that area were already below grade before the collapse and probably was at least partial underground parking.

Saw that same schematic; far greater collapse than what has been presented on all the TV news.....no idea about underground parking. But it's all basically pancaked down.

The object just to the left of the pool is gone and there are some vehicles scattered in that area. I can't tell if they fell in or were "down there".

It seems that they tended to put in below ground parking as street parking is in short supply and the cost of a surface lot would be prohibitive since you are so close to the beach.

That is a good graphic in that it clearly shows how much of the original building is gone.

Hmmmm...........so why are model trains so expensive?

No, the actual answer is there are people who have too much money and not enough brains.

That does answer both questions and is what I was also alluding to albeit obliquely.

If I had a home in the section of the building still standing, I would be getting out as fast as possible . I haven't seen any concern about that part getting mentioned in any News anywhere. I'm amazed that section being possibly in danger of collapsing has not been mentioned, which almost seems irresponsible or narrow-visioned. Right?

Pretty sure that everyone is long, long, long evacuated and that the remains will end up being condemned and then demolished.

You must have missed it - one, they are shoring up the rest of the building - not sure what that really means or just how possible that might be, and two, it and some of the surrounding buildings are empty now and roads surrounding it are closed off, and third, maybe the reason you missed it is that it's painfully obvious even to the news networks.

I think most of those building have a driveway going up. In that part of town lobbies are 20 feet higher than Collins ave.

Looks like the underground sections collapsed; whether that happened before, during, or as a consequence of the building collapse itself is hard to know w/o a lot more information. Hard to put into real perspective just how large that pancaked pile of concrete that stacked up really is from that view. A street view in would be more useful but maybe hard to find a current one. Terrible event.

I hope someone is taking a long look at all the buildings on that block. It appears there is a waterway next to that building.

It's really hard to tell. There are a few pictures from the north side but the neighboring building limits how far back the photographer can pull plus a lot of emergency equipment is occupying the space. The entrance to the garage was off of that dead end street on the north side of the building.

The building to the south had been part of a three building complex (north, south, and east towers, north is the one that partially collapsed) with a small resort between south and east towers. The "east" tower which was immediately to the south of the tower that has partially collapsed was replaced by a new building. I can't tell when this occurred as I don't trust the dates on Google Earth imagery. They still show the old east tower in both the satellite and ground view and say the image is from January 2021.

Allegedly they were doing concrete work on the roof as part of the repairs/upgrades for the 40 year inspection. Not sure if that was a contributing factor. The ground that the building were built on are filled in swamp land and the building was subsiding at a rate of 2mm/year. This initially sounds alarming until you put it in context that the surrounding buildings were sinking at a faster rate!
