Hardly new; this is just an example of what Chuck had related a bit up the page of a failure to appropriately protect systems from something that's years old and should never have happened. This is closer to negligence.

Gary, Indiana targeted by ransomware attack

GARY, Ind. (WLS) -- The city of Gary is trying to recover from a ransomware attack.

All of its servers are now being restored and rebuilt.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security were both alerted and a city spokesperson says they're still investigating if anyone's personal information was stolen.

Hearing the Russians did it has become like hearing the white man is a racist....really has no meaning, just more leftist noise.

Well, the second half of the video sure seems to be our world in the USA. Overall, IMHO, we are so F'd up in this country, I'm not sure it will ever be changed. Due to political correctness, tolerance of crime, acceptance of adverse behavior, equal rights for every lamebrain group or sub-group (actually very unequal rights), I fear we've become an easy target for any aggressive country. I think a Hitler type person could kick our *ss today, so hopefully it all just political BS. :)

Given the sources, almost certainly. Which goes to why we are so F'd up in this country.

Ransomeware attacks are nothing new. In the past the attacks have mainly been against doctors and lawyers in private practice. They made for easy pickings as they rarely did anything to secure/protect their systems. Things like turning on firewalls, installing updates, configuring machines to be secure, backing sh*t up and not including sensitive data so any information stolen would be useless. They rarely notified anyone about break ins and would sometimes actually pay the ransom's. They had no plan for dealing with this. When confronted about missing patient/client data they would cover up the loss as "computer malfunction" and would claim they were still working on recovery.

Re the "TV ads" there is a fair amount of incorrect images in the ads which makes me wonder about their validity. Some of the equipment pictured is not used by the alleged organization. Some of it looks like US/Western equipment. This was common practice in the US government print material during the early Regan days. US equipment would have photoshopped Soviet markings to puff up the threat. They assumed (quite rightly) that most Americans have no idea what our own equipment looks like so it was easy to disguise it.

While YouTube can be a good tool for passing along information, it can also be a great tool for passing along mis-information and not always for expressly political reasons. A lot of it is just an elaborate form of click bait to get you to "subscribe" so they can expose you to more crap and collect ad money for views. Some of these folks could teach PT Barnum a thing or two about scamming. Always view it critically.

Facebook has free games designed to get your passwords. People giveaway their security daily. Here’s an example. “ want to know your superhero name and powers?” Enter your mothers madden name. Now tell us your birth stone . If you would like to give your hero a custom theme tells what your first car was. If your hero would like a sidekick use your pets name. People enter this stuff . Then they see a cartoon photo and name of their hero. Your hero’s name is “ FRED DOLTON , his power comes from topaz stones and he drives around in a Chevy Nova. With his trusty k9 sidekick PATCHES. In one simple game people have entered what might turnout to be 4-5 correct security answers
