I saw the Whatzit layout in a magazine but can't remember which magazine or issue date. I have been looking through old OSR issues. I keep getting distracted by articles I want to read again or ones which I only looked at the pictures and now want to read the text.

"Pete" somebody ? Or "WmPete" ? Just a dim memory. Pieces. An impression.

So what is the origin of the photo you used in the post? I assume it's a scan from a magazine article?

It looks like its O scale, possibly proto 48. Looks like post steam era, those are diesels in the back ground. The engine marking appear to be Santa Fe or possibly D&RG, can't tell because of the low resolution. Its not a visitor friendly layout (no viewing areas) so that makes it either a personal project or a "club" layout. It's large. The lights indicate it is at least 50 feet deep and at least 30 feet wide. The layout is multi layer and the ceiling is 12-16 feet high.

The vegetation and land forms indicate a mountainous region but not high enough for snow on the peaks. The vegetation indicates pine/fir, rather tall, aka enough moisture to support large trees. This would indicate they are modeling western Colorado, central Utah, northern Nevada and possibly eastern side of Central California.

The photo, dated 29 Feb 2012, is from here => https://hosting.photobucket.com/albums/ ... fit=bounds

I first saw it in a magazine. The steps caught my attention at the time. Then, when I saw it in one of Jay Criswell's albums, I thought it might make a good model railroad whatzit.

BTW, the photobucket photo you referenced in the immediately previous post has been cropped. Why?

Fresno O Scale Layout!!! That's it. I remember a strong urge to drive to Fresno to see the layout (if they would allow it.)
What a gorgeous layout. The video is almost as good as visiting the layout.
At the start and end of the video I noticed a locomotive (SP 2-8-2) that Jay Criswell had in his photo albums.
Thank you for the link, Chuck.

The photo is not cropped, it is in standard 4:3 format. The reason the image I used is wider is because I spliced to photos together for a wider view.

Right clicking on this image can lead to a slightly larger image.

Huge layout, some more YouTube "hobo rides". The original photo(s) that Wayne posted are taken at about 65% of the total layout length. Yes, there is 35% to the right of the picture that is missing/hidden.

No 9: Huge yard and town "around the bend" of that lobe in the center of the photo. There is a drawing of the layout visible briefly in a couple of sections. It is a bunch of layers of different elevations folded dog bones that seem to criss cross in the vicinity of the yard. Incredible levels of detail. I think the only way you can see/appreciate it is with the engine cams.

The modeling of that hillside in the photo that Wayne provided is exceptional. Look at the realistic use of a variety of foliage populating the terrain, as well as the really intelligent emplacement of the smaller rock detritus at the bottom of the slope, exactly where it would be accumulated in real-life. Wonderful. To me,, such realistic creativity is beyond craft-work; it is art.

The Hobo Ride videos really play up the level of detail on the layout. It reminded me of the Rocky Mountaineer trip I took with the wife back in the 90's when we crossing Kicking Horse pass. There is a gorgeous "town" and extensive rail yard. The trees are beautifully detailed. It looks like they may have used model airplane rigging for the wires on the telegraph poles (a very fine elastic product that doesn't "sag" over time). A lot of thought and engineering work on the substructure. Wish someone did a book on the construction and detailing like the one on John Allen's Gorre and Daphetid.

I have not forgotten the flower whatzit but I have not found its name yet, so, CIRCLES.

This is a Beechcraft T-tail King Air.

Here is a source for the upper image. It even has the same letters in the hangar/office window in the upper left.

I have downloaded the image and examined it with high magnification. I can't find those 5 orange and black circle anywhere. The texture of the aircraft skin seems to be a match for the lower parts of the engine cowling but I still don't see any dots/circles.
