PSC DD40 Repair

Okay, I just learned how to post photos to this forum with the help of several forum members. I learned I was coping the URL for the photo hosting page and not the photo, once I understood that, it became easy, but I made it more difficult than need be.

So maybe a little photo journal modeling is in order. I bought this PSC "Crown" UP DD-40 recently and sadly it arrived with shipping damage. Seller was very fair and we arrived at an amicable solution for both of us. So, I'm going to try and fix it. Never attempted to fix a brass model damaged like this before, so we'll see how it goes. Worse case scenario I fix it the best I can and then say I'm modeling a loco that had a minor collision in the yard.

This is the 1st Japanese built diesel I ever worked on (made minor repairs to OMI and KEY models over the decades) and KTM (builder) uses thicker brass sheet than the Koreans. It's built like a tank and engineering to mid 80's standards...meaning it uses diodes and resistors to control the lights and runs on straight DC. Also, the drive is noted for being one of the most unique in O scale and a bit of a Rube Goldberg affair. Will be covering all of that later too.

Ok, the code you used for them was the their hosted address then..... Most stuff of that sort of origin is hosted somewhere you can't get to; what you can do though is download it from the email, upload the photos back to your own hosting account, and then post them here....

As a kid, I vividly remember going to Hawkins Rail after school and watching his big O scale 2R trains. He had a huge operating O & HO display in his store. On point of an O scale train was a UP DD, in bare brass. It was absolutely incredible. Impressive and massive in the eyes of a young boy.

Always loved DD’s, both the locomotive and....

Looks to be a doable repair, but tedious and slow to be careful not to cause issues while straightening and then rebuilding the end parts.

Thanks Roger, like most of us I've been gathering modeling tools for decades, but learned only a decade ago, that if tools aren't handy you forget you have them when needed.

Yes, I'm already shedding details and to do it right (solder) means I'll be touching up a lot of paint. Luckily most of it will be gray and I can always weather to get it to match. This is a complete learning experience for me.....but it is fun and hopefully I'll get better.

Okay, this is more like it. Went back to my film camera day experiences and dumped the "automatic" setting and went aperture priority and can control the depth of field and focus. Much better clarity. So, modeling is teaching me computer skills and reteaching me camera fundamentals as well. And Wow, can I see ugly now.
