You need to get yourself a tutorial on Ebay bidding. First, there is NO way of someone knowing what your high bid is (unless they have hacked Ebay, which I seriously doubt, but anything is possible).
For example if you are the under bidder and your max bid is $500 for an item and I put in a snipe for $2000, my winning bid will be one bid increment above your$500 bid. The bid increments are preset by Ebay and increase as the bidding amounts rise. There's a table of them somewhere on the Ebay site. Let's say for the sake of this example the bid increment at the $500 level is $10. My winning bid will be $510, but may max bid was 2K, so you didn't have a snowball's chance in Hades of winning the auction. You think you lost the auction by $10, but you actually lost by $1500.
You are correct about Ebay.....they will get their percentage.
