Re: Car Thread
Was it ripped open like that from the crash, or did authorities use the Jaws-of-life to rip it open further, I wonder.

Jaws-of-life were not available then - roughly 20 years later......
Just remember: what horses consider play, monkeys consider business, but to Tom it’s all foolery.

That's what I thought but wasn't sure. Thanx.
Such a shame.

I remember seeing Roy Orbison's early 60's Corvette at the Cleveland Rock and Roll Museum a number of years ago. Once I read that Zora Arkus Duntov stated the 63 to 67 Corvette had just enough lift to be a very bad airplane!

I can recall, as a boy during the 50's, rushing on our bikes to a nearby Chevrolet dealership to see the very first Corvettes. They were available only (?) in white, and had those wire mesh-like shields over each headlight, plus a red interior.
Also, when the 1958 Impalas made their debut, we loved the aggressive look and change from the beloved 57's, and that humpy rear end design, with the three small round taillights above each end of the rear bumper. Hot cars, we thought. Then, when the 1959 models made their debut, with those extreme gull-wing type changes to the rear part of the "fins," we felt the design began going downhill, and so on for the next couple years.
We though the same thing about "our" beloved Cadillacs, though their design step into the early 60's seemed a bit more tasteful as the fins got more reduced in their upward reach and sweep.
What d' you say, guys?
Re: Car Thread
My father had a '63 Coupe de Ville. The fins were still fairly large. They were the same style in '64, but a little smaller. I think they just sort of disappeared, after '64.

Re: Car Thread
You're right Murph, the late 50's and 60's was a golden age for car design. I feel extremely fortunate to have been an early teen when the 60's decade started.
I have fond memories of riding my bike with buddies (all under 16) and watching and hearing many of the "older" guys parade around in their new cars, exercising them whenever the opportunity arose. Then in 65', when the 442's, Satelites, GTO's, 327 or 396 Supersports and Chevelles, 390 Fairlanes, Etc. hit the road, there were daily drag races in front of the local hamburger joint, that just happened to be on a divided state highway. "American
Graffiti" for real.
Wonderful memories and nothing like growing up in a small midwest suburb of KCMO during the 60's.

Re: Car Thread
During that era just a glace was all that was needed to identify a car, usually.
IMHO the that period also had some of the ugliest ever made. My top spot
ugly car was/is the 1963 DeSoto, Everything about it was in excess.

The first car I bought for myself was a 59 Impala either in 61 0r 62, black with a red interior. I swore I would never own another black car after that one. However a year ago....

What, exactly, was in excess, Roger? Specifically. I'm asking, because there was no 1963 DeSoto! The last DeSotos made were 1961 model year.
