A small snippet of my "Glow Worm"...

I am up to roughly 75 cars.

That is quite a collection of tank cars. I have 2 that are in need of a little help. but they look to be rather interesting, BUT I can not ID their origin. looks like you could answer my questions.

So I'll take some photos tomorrow and start a new subject thread.

This Thomas three-dome B&O tank car came into the shop in a small estate buy not too long ago:



It seems to me that most tank cars are owned by oil or chemical companies or are part of lease pools. Further, I want to say that most of the tank cars I have seen lettered for railroads are maintenance, usually water or diesel fuel. Anybody have any information on this? I know many or most model railroaders wouldn't much care, but I would hesitate to run a car that never left it's home railroad in some other railroad's consist.

The lettering appears to be for some other kind of car. B&O did not have any revenue tank cars listed in the ORERs I checked. And the Thomas tank cars were 40 ton capacity size rather than the 70 ton as lettered here. So bogus, but looks nice anyway.

The 6 domer looks great! I like the old style with the larger domes much more than the modern ones, particularly the PSC 10 and 8K and the Hobbyhills, prototype or not.

Me too - not wildly partial to the Thomas models - they need bar rail inserts to escape terminal flimsoidity.

Interesting observation, Dave. I will inspect the car (and the others that came with it) and see if there is additional evidence one way or another.

I am not the only one in three rail who has done that. Not much it to an actual prototype, so we just use left over paint and decals to make a car for the train that looks good.

Two rail at least you try to get color/style/roadname/road number right.

I have an NP Yellowstone (5000 series) that has experienced "selective compression" and if you count the wheels it is a Berkshire.

Just confounds the nit pickers.

I don't know about that - my impression is that the 3-railers have become far more picky than those of us with 2-rail track. I have a lot of freelance stuff, including Log-Mallets and that SP Berk that never existed. I have a 12 axle flat car with no prototype. And an SD-6 1/2!

But back to tank cars - I ever show you this?

while that can be true, in the "old days" before "scale 3-rail" we did what we could.
Happened.
Remember the gauge may be the same, but the scale, if I recall a writeup in probably RMC in the early 50's, it's about 1:53 average.
So nobody cared, especially when the biggest curve most used was 36" radius.

I have lots of stuff from back then. Balsa. Hand brushed paint. Plywood. Just look at some of the old evilbait offerings shown on these pages.
