Updated 5/28/2018:

Work continued today on the first table. In these first two photos, I attached a straight 10' poplar board to the wall on the studs. It is level and up against the bottom of the table.

I then screwed the table top to the poplar board with 3" drywall screws. Checking the table against the laser shows that we have a pretty level platform.

Thanks Roger! Clean off the blocks, no DQ. I'm now in the first lap of the marathon.

No worries. I've got you covered. Here's an old school DQ near Butler, PA. Still in business!

Updated 5/31/2018:

The second table is a bit tricky. That’s not because of its construction (it is very similar to the first), but because of the sequence that must be followed. If you look at the plan below, you’ll see the steps involved:

Tables 1 & 2.jpg
Tables 1 & 2.jpg (88.5 KiB) Viewed 2342 times

Step 1: Construct the outer 4’ x 8’ frame.

Benchwork_030_.JPG
Benchwork_030_.JPG (40.83 KiB) Viewed 2342 times

Step 2: Add the cross-member (“A”) and the south-easternmost internal rib (Identified as “B”).

Benchwork_028_.JPG
Benchwork_028_.JPG (38.33 KiB) Viewed 2342 times

Step 3: Add the northernmost internal rib (“C”). Because of B’s placement, we have to attach this one to the frame with a corner brace.

Benchwork_032_.JPG
Benchwork_032_.JPG (38.33 KiB) Viewed 2342 times

Step 4: Flip the table onto its back and attach the legs.

Benchwork_040_.JPG
Benchwork_040_.JPG (37.79 KiB) Viewed 2342 times

Step 5: Flip the table onto its legs and check the hole alignment with the previous table. These holes are for the carriage bolts that will be used to attach this table to the first one. The remaining holes are for electrical track power buses and switch power / switch buses. I'm going to have to do some aligning.

Step 6: Here' s the tricky part. We need to get 4 tall (102”) 2x2’s upright and mounted against rib B (installed in Step 2). These will support the ¼” Masonite boards that carry the steel mill backdrop. Another tall 2x2 will be mounted close to the back wall; the sixth tall 2x2 will be installed in the table closest to the aisle. These are all marked as “X” on the plan. They are lying on another table in the photo below.

Updated 6/1/2018:

We're still at Step 6 (the tricky part). Here is the first upright for the divider. It's clamped in place.

Here's a slightly closer look at the first upright. It was more important that it be vertically straight for the backdrop than anything else.

Here's the second upright.

Benchwork_046_.JPG

I used a long screw and a corner reinforcement to make sure the second upright stayed in place.

I also remembered that I have to bolt the two tables together and create holes for wiring runs.

Q: How do you know you’re making progress converting a pile of lumber into a layout?
A: You start hitting your head on the bench work above.

I may get to see this layout.
Really want to see the backdrop you had made.
I may not recognize the area it has been so long since I have been there, at least 18 years.
Waiting. Impatiently. :D

Your wish is my command, at least in miniature. Here it is.

The real miniature version is 1.2 MB. It would have taken up too much attachment quota.

Updated 6/02/2018:

The progress on the backdrop divider continues! The next few photos show the installation of 5 of the 6 vertical supports. That's a piece of masonite backdrop support in the left foreground.

Benchwork_050_.JPG

To get the 3 pieces of masonite to fit, I had to be very careful with the placement of the vertical supports. Masonite widths (from wall to aisle) are 4', 2', and 4' for a total length of 10'. The vertical 2x2's must support the points where the masonite pieces abut.

In this tight space, corner braces were the right choice.

We even had an inspection visit from Samantha. Her boss, Chief Motor Inspector Pumpkin is too arthritic to get down the stairs. So she sent her underling instead.

Nice work George. You must have been a carpenter in a previous life :).

Looking good. This is going to be the most well-documented layout build ever...

Is that your radon-evacuator on the window above?

Thank you, but you are too kind. Panhandle 1.0 was the poster child for rough carpentry. I'm working hard to avoid that. But in all truth, I'm too slow to be a good carpenter. The real carpenter and cabinet maker in my family was my maternal grandfather (the one who made the ship models).

No, that is a window fan I bought and installed for venting the basement. In my last house, the basement would get very close with 10-20 people in it. My thought is to have a way to exhaust any accumulated train smoke and maybe get colder outside air into the basement. Don't know if it will have the desired effect.

One assumes that you can actually get to it with reasonable ease; open the window, etc.?

Rest looks good; more clamps. Good weather for this sort of thing, too!
