Your supervisor appears to be the micromanager type.

I'm enjoying your Gloor Craft kit thread. They are interesting kits to build especially these days with resin, plastic, and r-t-r stuff available. I had bashed a couple of the Gloor Craft UP caboose kits into SP cabeese when the brass imports were not yet available.

Charles, enjoy away!

Aren’t I supposed to put some kind of tissue paper on the roof to simulate tar?

You can do that if so desired. Not hard to do either. Although for O scale tissue is a little light; I use single ply napkin material with a 50% overlap set into place with ~30% aqueous Carpenter's glue painted Lark Dark Grey after dry and trimmed to fit all around.

Alternatively smooth is also appropriate. Black cheap enamel brushed or sprayed, dry, smooth with wire-wool, repeat. It'll look fuzzy the first couple times, but go nicely smooth with a few goes. It might need a trip or two using some talc (unscented) in the paint as a filler (classic home-brew sanding sealer). Thats how we got smooth passenger car roofs old-school, too.

Why unscented? Will baby powder mess it up? We use baby powder instead of talc on inner tubes (yes, aviation still uses 1920 technology).

I'll go out on a limb and say " you can't get talc. in powder anymore" It's all talc free. That far south west state claims it causes cancer.

Talcum powder mixed in paint as a sanding sealer...interesting tip.

Why unscented?

I guess just because it makes the paint smell fresh and clean whilst promoting vaginal cancer in Californian mice or some dam thing. It really might not make any difference and I'm just a paranoid old Luddite

That of course makes me wonder what else is in it that screws up the process, so I just use unscented talcum powder and not worry about it.

Bob, those who drive old cars, especially sports cars with "wire" wheels, also still put powder on tubes and flaps if they are smart. I hate tubes, flaps, and wire wheels. Grin!

I just did a little digging about with respect to Robert (Full-Stop) posting. Once you get past the paid lawfirm spittleflecked adverts (Bark! Bark-bark!) that are forced to the top of the google searching, you discover that latest Cali suit was appealed by J&J and vacated (in Cali, no less) because there is no study that proves talcum causes ovarian cancer though there is enough circumstance to warrant warning of potential and nothing more.

The Cancer Institute postings are pretty concise at the moment.

So, anyone who uses talcum powder ("baby powder" can be talcum powder or a corn starch powder, I discover) don't apply it to your lady-garden whilst sealing wood. You have been warned.

My ex-wife’s lady garden sure could have used some sealant.

Sarge - did not know reason prevailed on appeal. There was outrage, of course, but when things get a critical look, it is often not publicized. Anyway, my tire lady told me baby powder is simply scented talc.

I buy lacquer based sanding sealer by the gallon. Used to last a quarter century - I have to open the can for a Scale Craft boxcar project; will let you know if lacquer is still forever. Some paints now have a six month shelf life!
