George,
Thanks for posting the flood photos. Two things.

There was another flood the next year that was almost as bad. The 1937 flood was worse in the
lower Ohio Valley than the 1936 flood was . Also the scenes of the steel mills were being repeated all over the area in many businesses. Over a @ 30 mile stretch in this area there were at least 8 steel mills and many other related industries. Today if you visit the area that is hard to believe.

The photos don't really show how big this flood was. The normal level of the river can't be determined. My hometown 25 miles south of Steubenville
had in some sections of town houses that were completely covered with water.

Generally, flooding of the Ohio River can be prepared for as can be seen in the mill photos posted by George.

Roger is absolutely correct. Photos do not do the floods justice.

In Weirton, the flood waters would proceed inland and up and Main Street for more than a mile.

Take a look at the satellite map below. The area between the red parentheses is the lower end of "the cove". If you go to Google (use Weirton WV in the search box) and take the satellite view, you can see how the town rests in an alternate river bed.

All that area would be flooded. And perhaps more.

The volume of water rushing through a constricted channel can be unbelievable. I’ve seen photos of the WM bridge at Doe Gully with debris hanging off the superstructure. There the deck is sixty feet above the Potomac with the underside of the supporting truss probably forty feet off the water. The fact that this stuff is still standing 100 years or so after being built is a tribute to those engineers.

I hear you.

I once visited the Great Falls of the Potomac. You look into that huge cauldron of water and rocks and then at the high-water markers 10-15 feet above and it's completely stunning. Hard to imagine that area filled with water.

BTW did you guys check out the McKims ridge post in the Railfanning sub-forum?

Update 2/15/2018:

The backdrop arrived a short while ago. Here's a look at it.
Master Key.jpg
Master Key.jpg (1.15 MiB) Viewed 2508 times

Some notes:
  • Panel 1 is against the left wall. A styrofoam mountain in the corner will tie it and Panel 2A together.
  • Panel 2 has two lengthwise parts (A & B)
  • Panel 3 has two parts (Top & Bottom)
  • Panel 4 has two lengthwise parts (A & B)
  • Panel 5 has two parts (Top & Bottom)

I am currently finalizing the installation process. Before I can start, though, I need to get the Staging Area tables built.

Sounds like a plan!

Are you all going to help put up the backdrop or wait till it's done to come over?

George,
Maybe you don't want to say on the forum and I understand but where in PA do you live now?

George,
Thanks but not many maps of PA with the townships listed available in this area.
But that does narrow it down .

NO! I'm management. I'll be there just to provide unhelpful direction and comments throughout the entire operation all whilst seated under an umbrella drinking an adult libation.
