That's a really good way to end up in the ER.

I figured. That's why I thought twice about giving it a clop. Now, I keep my distance. I don't even yell anymore. But my resulting stick garden is a real source of suburban pride for us. NOT!

Good point! I hadn't thought of that! Just think of it - ripped open deer carcasses scattered around my humble yard! I'll look forward to that! :D (Pictures to follow, hopefully.)

Probably not where you'll see them....and they won't leave much in the way of leftovers.....

Ohman, I'd pay money to see that - several coyote dragging and chomping on a recently-killed deer carcass, loping down the 2-lane road, headed thru the neighborhood, horrifying one neighbor after another, headed for the elementary school close by. I'll bet that would get the attention needed for some kind of deer and coyote culling needed around here.

Father may have gotten it for us out on Staten Island. I'll ask him when we see him Sunday. (It was I who had warned him about the bear and coyote threat in our area, especially since he had gotten into the habit of walking his miles at dusk or even later, despite my having warned him of that not being a good time to be out afoot and alone out here among so many stands of trees and extensive woods.)

They don't like flashing bright lights (deer). You might be able to set the delay on the $30 Harbor freight solar security lights to something low enough to make a slow strobe light until they leave the area. This is the only way I've found to keep them out of the road when driving into work. Steady light seems to hypnotize them, flashing lights (hi/low beams on the car) seem to spook them and so far they've spooked out of the road and back into the woods. They may be cute but they are STUPID!

If the bears are getting to accustomed to the area the pro's (whatever NJ calls wildlife management) should be the ones trapping them and hauling them way back into the mountains. They usually tag them and then track them. If they head back into town they use the tracker to find and euthanize them.

I don't blame them per se as people keep encroaching farther and farther into what would be their area. Buy a plot of land, put up a big house and then put in a sh*t load of bright lights for "security". All those lights do is attract less savory characters of both the two and four legged kind.

BTW, you may want to get some Tiki Torches and place them around places where the critters come into the yard. You don't need to light them, just keep them filled. I don't know of anything that likes the smell of kerosene (OK, maybe Robert Duvall). It's the carrier in your wasp spray.

Dig it up and plant opuntia compressa....

Now strangely enough we have deer in droves here, totally fearless, but they do not touch the garden other than to eat the hosts blooms...

You're only allowed to carry 3/4 of fluid in NJ. If Your pepper spray has more it is illegal. That's just enough for the bear to make a spicy burrito out of you.

REI carries Counter Assault and they don't have NJ down as a restricted ship to state. It looks like it's carried in the REI stores in East Hanover and Paramus. Not cheap but it's supposed to work even on Grizzlies.

Has a better record than firearms. Fire arms about 50%, Counter Assault 94%.

Really kind of you, Roy, to post that link for me. I have read it top-to-bottom. It was especially comforting to understand from the information that red pepper sprays such as the "Rail Guard" spray were effective 98 o/o of the time, with 92 being for Brown; 90 for Black; 100 o/o for Polar. Wind is a factor. The site even provided and handy diagram of how to angle the application.

Very, very nice of you to provide all that for me. Thank you, again.
P.S. It was even mentioned that the canisters are heat sensitive, so that leaving it on the dashboard would be a possible cause of a canister exploding since the contents are under pressure and, therefore, heat sensitive.

P.P.S. And, yes, I did notice  that no mention or recommendation was made concerning the (dubious) "wisdom" of my  carrying an aluminum baseball bat with me, :? :D also. (Even though I still will.) But as was pointed out when we were considering my garbage-curbing shenanigans, how would I manage all that equipment when under imminent attack?! :? Oh well. I'll use the bat as a weed-whacker and walking stick. Who knows. But Roy, you came to the rescue! I was a bit dubious about such sprays and had my hopes mostly in the bat, but this information straightens that odd notion out, once and for all.

Nothing else about NJ makes sense so I'm not surprised. It does seem odd that there are two other states that they won't even ship to (Massachusetts and Wisconsin) and two that they won't ship to a PO box (Alaska and Hawaii).

Maybe you can only buy it as a gift for someone out of state (except Mass. and Wisconsin) or you can buy it but only use out of state (except in Mass. and Wisconsin).
