Interesting advice, but I am not throwing rocks, because I do not care about his taking a swipe at the garbage, just not at me. :D

Murph.
Here is something you might want to look into. Air Horn.
Do Air Horns make for good bear deterrents?
http://hikinginthesmokys.blogspot.com/2 ... -bear.html

“Air horns are unproven in their effectiveness. High-pitched noises can arouse curiosity or irritate a bear.”

However, the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife did recommend using air horns while hiking to scare aggressive bears away. Furthermore, according to an article in the Alaska Star, wildlife managers in Banff, Canada and Eugene, OR also use air horns to scare urban or problem bears away.

I found a few other examples of wildlife mangers suggesting that air horns are an effective deterrent to aggressive bears as well.

You can't shoot bears with heavy ordnance, even on your own property?

As for CA., my father had a Winchester 38-40, and a Remington .22 rifle. I got to shoot the Remington at a friend's birthday party, but since I shoot a rifle left-handedly, I wasn't able to fire the Winchester.

What about the bear spray? It's proven to work on bears, and it's non-lethal. Essentially, it's pepper spray.

Right now, when I go out at night to put the garbage at the curb, twice per week, I carry a crowbar :? and my trusty wasp spray  (cap removed), at-the-ready. What else can one do.

I tried. I got to about paragraph three or five and started to get a major headache. I'm not sure how the researchers working on this stay sane. The concepts are literally mind bending when they start talking about bending time and folding space back on itself. Is gravity a result of bending time or vice versa, or both?

Agreed! I tried taking notes during one of their presentations. This is what I got:

+cold & dark spaces.
+frozen dust clouds forming into "sub-millimeter radiation," different forms of light.
+the story of the Universe is still being written.

Yup. That's some of what I took down, Chuck. Now, the obvious question is, what do I do with it?! :? :D

They are increasing since they are flying in to NJ specifically to visit you..........

BTW, generally black bears are after the fawns; that many deer also indicates a lack of any real predators for the adults, too.

That's what we were figuring, too, especially after seeing scenes like this one, right across the street from us. The adult and fawns had just left our yard.

Thank you, Rufus, Hondo, Tom, Roger, Robert, Chuck, Wayne, and Roy for your latest information and interest in my plight.

I'll look for the bear sprays, though our pastor did give us both handy-dandy hand-holdable pepper sprays to carry in our pockets/cars. I've been spraying what's left of the shrubs with coyote urine but, I swear, it seems to be something they like - maybe it makes them high, but I do not see them avoiding the plants I have sprayed. And besides, I have wondered if the urine spray attracts coyotes which have been reported to be on the increase, too - goodlord, we'll have them mating in the yard, deer frolicking thru, and the bear saying Howdy, bub.

Good point! I hadn't thought of that! Just think of it - ripped open deer carcasses scattered around my humble yard! I'll look forward to that! :D (Pictures to follow, hopefully.)

P.S, Note the casual attitude of the adult deer in the above photo I took. The fawns are relaxing and the adult gives me a look - I am yelling at it to scram - "Ha! Ha!" it smirks back at me. "Who? Me? You yelling at me? Well don't."

The women of my family adore deer. They are a pestilence.
If deer had little beady eyes and long hairless tails, they'd be dealt with as they deserve.

I can fully understand that, both the affection part and the appearance deer have.

On one occasion, my wife and I were sitting on the front porch (when I took that photo of the deer across the street at my neighbor's) when several good sized and large deer casually gamboled through our sideyard. I got up immediately from the porch and went directly over to the largest one, not 3' away from its face, which was turned in my direction. It snorted in obvious contempt  and turned its head away from my glare, taking measure of the yard across the street, I assumed. I thought of giving it a slap or a punch,  or of picking up an stick and giving the quite-tall deer a whack. HOWEVER, one look at that face and asked myself who could hit such a beauty, or hit anywhere else on the animal! :o Not I. Apparently. :o I'm not even sure I could shoot one, even if we were allowed to do so in such a suburban neighborhood, not that I have a simple rifle anymore.

Probably not where you'll see them....and they won't leave much in the way of leftovers.

Well, they know you're not a threat or a predator.
