Nearly unbelievable, the stuff you read on a model train forum. My recollection (amazing that I have any given the beatings endured) is that the archangel Gabriel is the patron saint of communications. If you've got an iPhone addiction, best pray to him.

There is only one "archangel" and it is not Gabriel. See Jude 1:9.

Actually, I recall from my reading that there were 7...........but that was reduced to 4 out of convenience to place one at each cardinal point.

When I started studying the bible, it seemed like I had been lied to in catechism class. When the Catholic Encyclopedia went online in 1995, I knew I had not been taught the truth. What Catholics are taught is not always the same as what the Offical Catholic Church believes. The true Catholic understanding of the bible, as presented in the Catholic Encyclopedia, mostly* agrees with what the bible says. Which bible? All that I have read (See https://www.biblegateway.com/ for a list of the bibles I use for reference.)

I better confess I have not researched the Catholic Encyclopedia extensively. I only look things up when my Catholic upbringing rings a bell, "Ding! That is not what I was taught!"

From what I can recall from parochial elementary school, and from a review recently, kindly, let me offer some beliefs I have held, to this day:

That The Archangel Gabriel, a messenger angel, appeared to The Blessed Virgin Mary, and many of us believe we know what was announced. This appearance by the Archangel, to Mary, has been commemorated in several works of art. The Bible includes this Archangel's visit to two other personages , the prophet Daniel, and Zachariah (about John the Baptist.)

Furthermore, Jewish tradition has the Archangel Raphael as one of the three angels that appeared to Abraham, and that it was Archangel Raphael who endowed Sarah with the strength to conceive. Catholics revere Archangel Raphael as the angel who healed the sick at the pool of Bethesda.

Let's look at Archangel Raphael first.

The Catholic Encyclopedia says, "The name of this archangel (Raphael = "God has healed") does not appear in the Hebrew Scriptures, and in the Septuagint only in the Book of Tobias."

The angel Raphael reveals his name in Tobias 3:15 in this way, "Who am I? I am the angel Raphael, and my place is among those seven who stand in the presence of the Lord."

Notice Raphael does not reveal that he is an archangel here or anywhere else. There is something fishy about calling Raphael an archangel.

In fact, there is something fishy about Tobias. The story was probably written originally in Aramaic and is estimated to be of about the third century B.C.E. It is obviously not inspired by God because of the superstition and error found in the narrative. Among the inaccuracies it contains is this: The account states that in his youth Tobit saw the revolt of the northern tribes, which occurred in 997 B.C.E. after Solomon’s death (Tobit 1:4, 5, JB), also that he was later deported to Nineveh with the tribe of Naphtali, in 740 B.C.E. (Tobias 1:11-13, Dy) That would mean that he lived more than 257 years. Yet Tobias 14:1-3 (Dy) says he was 102 years old at the time of his death.

The Catholic Encyclopedia says the Septugint version of the bible is certainly apocryphal due to the many errors in it.

One more thing, the Catholic Encyclopedia names the seven angels who stand in the presence of the Lord; only three, Gabriel, Michael and Raphael, are mentioned in the canonical Scriptures. The others, according to the Book of Enoch (cf. xxi) are Uriel, Raguel, Sariel, and Jerahmeel, while from other apocryphal sources we get the variant names Izidkiel, Hanael, and Kepharel instead of the last three in the other list.

The Archangel Gabriel

Despite the title of the chapter on Gabriel in the Catholic Encyclopedia being, "St. Gabriel the Archangel", nowhere in the bibical references in the article does it say that Gabriel is an archangel. Somebody made it up.

The truth is in the bible.
