Yes. I hadn't soldered since 8th grade shop class (big clunky irons with open furnaces). But my younger son gave me a lesson while he was here. It's easier than I thought or remembered (pays to have the right tools).

And for some connections, soldering will be used. For others, I will still want to crimp them.

Indeed. The surfaces to be soldered must be clean. And, you have to use enough heat.

Yes, I must agree. I can't believe how many bad crimps I've made. It's maddening.

Soldering under the layout is all I will ever do because the last thing I want is having to trouble shoot for an open under there. Every so often I set the iron on its stand and forget it's there. That's when I lay my knee on it.

I have used the suitcase connectors to connect feeder wires to the bus. They seem to be much better or at least less susceptible to a bad crimp.

I need to find a new pen-style iron as my old one has finally given up, leaving me with a nearly unusable gun-style. In the meantime Sarge has done a bit of soldering for me, sorting some figures and n-scale for me, but now I need to get back on the horse. I’ve got a 10E that needs a bit of repair to the shell...seems a good place to start.

Same here. However, I generally use my little torch for all things not electrically related, so I'm able to get by for now, but a decent pencil iron wold be a good acquisition this year.

They do make nice stands for soldering pencils. There's a large spring that holds the iron, and it has a base that holds a wet sponge for cleaning the tip.

I'm not that up on Greek Orthodox architecture, but I would say that church looks like one that was somewhat influenced by the local steel mill.
