I'm hoping that my planning is comprehensive or at least that I won't need to do any re-builds. Yes, there will probably be some adjustments as we get into things and learn more. I've got a lot of lessons learned in my hip pocket.

Updated 9/2/2017:
  • Sorted, labeled, boxed, and stored house-hold related items (screws, nails, electrical components, power strips, cable TV parts & pieces).
  • Sorted, labeled, boxed, and stored all the excess office supplies (diskettes, CDs, DVDs, computer components, cables, etc.).
  • Found three more boxes of odds-n-ends and tools over the past 2 days. That's all in place or tossed.
  • Tossed 4 boxes of work related stuff.
  • Tossed a large number of orphan screws and unrecognized 40+ year old junk.
  • Moved the last 2 tables (work spaces) into place.
  • Started assembling my spray booth.
  • Took delivery of the first batch of lumber for the Staging Area.

It's Labor Day, so I'm laboring.

"Tossed 4 boxes of work related stuff."

Congratulations on completing one of the first steps to recovery (as I sit here with my feet up on a box of work related stuff)

Thank you. It's wonderful to throw junk out.

Slowly but surely I am healing myself. I don't miss work, not one bit.

4 boxes of work related stuff.

If only it were so..........as I clean out my office moving to my next incarnation which will almost certainly require the retention of ~4400 published articles and book chapters.....and put 2 full Outback loads into a storage unit.

I am considering having my own research publications bound into hardback,

Why not?
My guess is that there is some significant stuff there.

Well, for one I have no idea what such an enterprise might cost - last time I had anything bound for hard back was my PhD dissertation and that bill was painful......

Having never been there Martin, I've always wondered how many copies of the book are required to be bound and distributed?

Dissertation? Depends on the University and what Department, etc and then numbers of folks on your committee, and how many copies for the various libraries and abstracting services - somewhere between 5-12 bound copies back when I did it.......for both degrees.

Back when it was typed by hand,    and back when there was a little old lady in the 3rd or 4th basement who checked the margins and formatting of every page with a ruler and could reject any page. At the time, we all wondered whether these little old ladies that did this for just about every University were clones or related in some way.....

Oh God, that was funny and brought back some memories. I think I had the first Masters thesis at my university that was written on the computer and text formatted (this is before WYSWYG (What You See is What You Get) word processors existed). It was so long ago that I forget the name of the program I used (ran on a DECsystem-10). I had to get special permission to use the computer to print it. Then I had to find / order a box of special 20 lb. bond paper with removal side perforations to run it through a dot matrix printer (Digital Equipment Corporation LA-120s).

I remember getting the keys to the terminal room in the CS building one night and running 3 LA-120s simultaneously. Of course first I had to make sure they all had new ribbons. I removed the perforations, tore them into separate pages, collated them, and bound the 9 copies.

And then I had to submit the copies to the Department of Redundancy Department where some guy (related that little old lady, no doubt  ) checked the margins with a ruler to see if I passed.

Seems like a million years ago.

I could have used the computer systems but inserting graphics and chemical structures then that were drawn by hand or done by dry transfers seemed an insurmountable complication on merging it all together.

No challenges at all today to do that......

Oh God, yes. I remember. The program allowed me to leave a certain number of lines (80 characters) for drawings. All my drawings (flowcharts) were drawn by hand and then taped onto the page and photocopied. But that was only in the appendices. I wasn't allowed to do that for the main body.

State of the art - 1979. I thought it was miraculous at the time, especially when compared to having someone type a version for $40 a pop.

Yep. The good old days.......... Today's kids have no clue.

I was talking to one about how we had to shim the magnetic field on a 220mHz NMR to be able to get spectra - control panel of verniers and an oscilloscope display - and then pen in the holder and paper on a chart...... Today it's push a button and it's all done.

NMR? Wow, I haven't heard that term in a while. Like 40 years. I think we played with nuclear magnetic resonance in Organic Chemistry class.
