Rush was a good movie, but alot of CGI for action. Grand Prix was the real deal with many of the professional drivers from the circus appearing. You can catch Graham Hill, Phil Hill and others if you watch closely. Nobody IMHO filmed automobiles like Frankenheimer...Ronin with De Niro is another brilliant example. In a number of his movies cars were his featured actors.

I heard that anti noise, too; I believe the smartassed remark that went around NYC at the time was, "Defoe as da lord," to disparage his acting in particular. I must admit, I was a little dubious about it, though. Murph

I have to re-watch Grand Prix - haven't seen it in decades.

Ronin is excellent from a number of perspectives - cast, action, dialogue - just well done.

Skyfall is easily the best Bond film ever and, in reality, an excellent movie independent of that genre (if you know what I mean).

Patton remains one of my all-time favorite films. I first saw it in 1970 in the Nixon Theatre in Pittsburgh (huge venue with balconies, wide screen). The visual impact of George C. Scott speaking to his troops against the large American flag was incredible and lasting.

2001: A Space Odyssey. I saw that a number of times in 70mm Dolby. Visually stunning.

Those off the top of my head.

George , good to be reminded of "Patton" and "2001: A Space Odyssey." Over the years, I've seen each of them 3x's and enjoyed them fully each time. I thought George C. Scott was spectacular = totally believable.

Patton of course.
2001 was boring after the opening as were the follow-up movies.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is interesting.
I like sci-fi but many of the movies seem to get twisted or loose the point.
Blade Runner. The Naked Prey.

It almost made my list, but it's terrible dated and just doesn't hold up well.

Unlike:

Blade Runner.

which does quite well. A lot of the Philip K. Dick based movies have done well.....and some are not so good, but some are better than mere entertainment.

Bridge On The River Kwai

Just about all the Errol Flynn movies. Read his book "My Wicked, Wicked Ways", he was a dog and a P-hound but I liked his movies.

Moby Dick, original

Twelve O'Clock High, IMO best WWII movie ever made.

White Heat (Made it Ma, top of the world!)

Little Caesar (Mother of mercy, is this the end of Rico?)

Soylent Green (.............is people!) and was Edgar G's last movie - that death scene at the end was close to real as he died ~ 2 weeks after they finished shooting the movie.

Metropolis (Fritz Lang's work...)

Dr. Strangelove (Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!)

Brazil (got to have a 27b/6 form handy at all times.........

Army of Darkness ( Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun.)

I like a lot on Rufus' list as well. A few others I thought of:

The Deer Hunter - filmed in Weirton, Follansbee, Steubenville, and Cleveland (among other places). Intense. Dark. DeNiro.

Paths of Glory - directed by Stanley Kubrick

Master and Commander - the type of period accurate piece you won't find anymore. Visually stunning with exceptional character development and story line. A Peter Weir film.

Witness - Another Peter Weir film. Again visually awesome.

The Train

Spaceballs - never was much into the Star Wars genre, but the satire is hilarious.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - semi-sweet and just a little bit nuts. ("Daddy, I want another pony.")

Deer Hunter also used Mingo a lot. The scene squeezing through a railroad underpass is in Mingo along with the following bar scene.
Names were changed on many buildings. It was a really big deal in Mingo. There is a funeral procession between Mingo and Steubenville
but the funeral took place in a Cleveland church. The deer hunt did not take place in Pennsylvania. The Mingo people including my mother
and step father would go to the bars in the evening and drink with many of the cast members.

I'm sorry. I knew Mingo Junction was the main filming area, but I had a brain fart.

That is very cool about your parents.

The high school drama teacher was an extra in one of the bar scenes. He was also an advisor to my high school class. At reunions I used to ask him kiddingly if he'd worked with DeNiro lately.
