I was at Cass the year they had a big spring flood. The crew was about to take the log loader and a couple of flat cars loaded with timbers and gravel up the mountain to repair a washout. Artie Barclay got to talking about the guy who ran the loader back when he started and Cass was still a logging railroad. One of the things he said was that the guy "could lay them tongs right in the palm of your hand". People who worked in those kinds of jobs developed their skills or were encouraged to find work elsewhere.

John,
Those were the good old days in some respects.
Life wasn't easy but if you didn't develop those skills you didn't have anything and nobody gave you what they worked hard for.
You know that. I don't need to go on. But thanks for the reminder.
My family, without going into a lot of detail, worked hard for me to be able to have and do what they couldn't.

I sent the picture of the Shay and loader to a friend of mine who models the Susquehanna and New York Railroad. He replied that the Shay (S&NY number 109) was built in 1903 and sold to the Pennsylvania Lumber Co. in 1913. The Gray's run branch of the railroad was abandoned about 1910. Coincidentally, I will be running the through freight from Newberry to Towanda and back this Saturday night on the HO scale S&NY.

Roger, I was in high school in the mid 60s so I do remember some of the ethics and attitudes you mention. Not all change is for the good.

Seems to be a whole lot of people in those wreck photos. Also i don't see any power equipment around. Do you think those poor fellows had to move everything back by hand?

All I see are hand tools, too. Maybe the mules are parked off to the side out of sight?

Maybe the crane is busy elsewhere doing the heavy work and out of the shot?

But there's nothing like a wreck to draw a crowd, is there?

Ok, so here's your crane busy at work on what was described as a LV wreck - LV crane working a string of P&R reefers...with a good crowd over in the bleachers watching,

Maybe the same as in #1 of the 3 given both are a string of reefers, but hard to tell for sure

Oh Wait, there weren't no TV.....

Yup. We're all heading down to the corner to watch the lights change color later and then over to Murph's to watch some paint dry. Now that's entertainment!

Wait, What the? Paint? You'd have a far better time watching the myriad layers and applications of glues drying, more likely, on 1/48-acres of mini-scenes. Or you could watch the heads on a variety of brewskies ( all provided by the Rufus,) fizzle down before imbibing? Eh? Huh? Wha'?

OR, we could take turns seeing who could actually make the group laugh, :| actual chuckles or tummy-rolling laughter. We'd pro'ly wanna have some refreshments between attempts, huh.    :P
