I believe those are what the reins are attached to, sort of like a yoke that you use to steer to horses.

That's my interpretation, too, Tom.

Well Murph, this is neither here nor there, but remember the famous words of singer/songwriter Roger Miller, "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd"!!

Yup. Good point, though it looks like somebody tried rolling around in an off-road type vehicle of some sort around these guys... :D

You must have good eyes Tom, or you know something I did not know. Thank you for the tip. Here is a detail from the Standard of Ur:

Sure enough, the reins are shown going to the key. The reins must be used to wind it up (so they don't have to stop and get off the chariot to wind it up.)

Well, if we're going to beat this to death, let's do it properly

I'm not one hundred percent on-board with his interpretation of the mosaic with regards to what the front of the chariot actually looked like, but it is an interesting point of argument.

Excellent research Healey. One last note, the round thing on the noses of the onagers (a type of donkey) in the mosaic represents nose rings. They did not use bridle bits back then. Like the chariot shields, the artist turned the rings so the viewer could see what they looked like.

That's the smoking gun there Wayne...very cool. Makes me wonder what a modern day rein guide look like...is it just a bar across the front of a wagon?

In a desperate effort to get this back on topic:
