Seen in Print
Re: Seen in Print
More people die in the U.S. and Canada from black bear attacks than are killed by grizzlies. A 250 lb. bear has six times the strength of an equal weight heavily muscled human. The more No Hunting/No Trespassing signs go up, the bigger the risk. Cracks me up about the folks down in Fox Chapel near Pittsburgh bitchin' about their shrubs bein' eaten by the deer in broad daylight in the city limits. A sportsman's group wanted to come in and do something about the deer population professionally, (with silencers), but the good citizens wouldn't hear of it.
We've had a bear in the neighborhood rip up all the garbage cans, and it layed on the neighbors driveway eatin' when the neighbor was only 25 feet away. (He never saw the bear, but my son did, and the bear just ignored the dog barkin' at it. I have a few means of defense: 12 Ga. with rifled slug, 300 Win. Mag with 180 gr. softpoint, and .41 Rem. Mag pistol with 210 gr. hard jacketed bullets. Still, nobody ever expects to go face to face with a bear, ('less you're an idiot).

Fox Chapel !? When I was a teenager, back in the 60's, that area was THE richest and most exclusive neighborhood in all of Pittsburgh, as far as my experiences took me. We used to eat at "The Gazebo" which had perfect Kosher corned-beef sandwiches. Never had any so good, except for the Carnegie Deli in NYC ,decades later. But I digress...
I can't even imagine deer in Fox Chapel. Have things changed that much there?
Oh, and I sure wish I had some of that home-defense collection you have. (I said "some"; I meant any.)

Good story, Healey, next time I feel threatened by a big trike, I'll follow your example and act accordingly.

Hey Murph - Last time upstate I pulled into the New Baltimore rest area on I-87 to pick up a coffee...maybe 06:45AM, I'm greeted by three coyotes standing at the edge of the parking lot. Thirty-six miles to the next plaza - no problem.
Like them, you have to adapt.

Fortunately you were not stopping to drop off a cup of coffee at the porcelain recycling center....

Re: Seen in Print
I wish it were actually possible to see more signs like that around. It would show there are folks with a sense of humor out there, somewhere, instead of all the serious jihad and self-centered claptrap we see and hear so much of currently. Eh? And the level of butt-rolling, lipstick-caked, groin-gyrating, pay-attention-only-to-me hedonism we see on selected channels, and alleged "stars" who are famous for enlarged body parts, not actual artistic talent (unless fornication and fellatio have become art-forms)...(not that that is a bad thing, no criticism, never that, not for me to say. I'm only describing

Sometimes it takes me a little while to get it but I usually do. I blame getting old.

Nah, I think they were waiting for a snack. And he showed up but was too quick-witted and fleet-of-foot. I'll pray for some of the same.
