silver maples. Your a few miles to south for sugar maples. Crap one of the leafs and check it out. Anyway fall sure came quick. I had thought it was so dry things would just turn brown and drop. we ended up with some nice color here.

Red maples maybe...definitely not silver maples...those go off yellow. We do have some sugar maples around here, some guys even tap them locally. The county nature center has a maple-fest in the spring with sugaring demos. They don't usually get too big here before the trunks seem to rot out.

Sugar maples are orange. Red maples are red but need a mate to do well. The tall guy is a split-leaf maple.

Went back and looked at the leaves on the trees in question...they look like red maples:

I have two silver maples in my back yard and those have barely started to change color. I called a buddy that works at the University of Maryland Extension Service...he says there are sugar maples in northern and western Maryland, but that they do not get to any size close to those in the northeast as the trunks have a tendency to rot from the top down (didn't explain why). Back in the last century my parents had a sugar maple in their front yard that survived for about ten years...got to be about eighteen feet high before it started to die off.
