They looked nice but you would still need to cut the cross arms.

He said they are Weaver. Walthers is just a distributor.

Yeah, I think the choices for telephone poles, lighted or unlighted, are few.

In production:
  • Lionel offers 3 sets of scale poles (each set contains 6 poles). Most of them are pretty nice, but pricey with MSRPs up in the mid-30s or 40s. Street prices hover around the $20-25 mark. Still pricey in my opinion. They also have a non-scale set of 6 for $10 MSRP.
  • Keil-Line offers a lighted pole and transformer kit at $10 apiece. It's a nice kit, but if you need anything approaching a decent quantity...
  • The Weaver line pole kits are the most realistic, IMO. They are based upon meticulous research of the prototype, including the glass resistors. They also offer the flexibility to roll your own variations. For example, Pennsy line poles could have up to 8 cross-arms. Weaver will support up to 4 cross-arms with pre-made holes. I think the Weaver pole kits are less expensive than Lionel and offer the customization opportunities I needed.

Out of production:
  • Life-Like
  • Marx
  • There was a guy on the OGR forum who had a business making telephone poles. He went out of business about 3-5 years ago.

I'm sure I am forgetting someone. Or many "someones".

Power and phone poles are hard to sell because they are something a lot of people omit or they don't care about the detail and slap their own together with nothing more than dowels, tooth picks, and glue.

Maybe so. I think the company was called "DMR"? Do you know who he sold it too? All I recall reading was that he had ceased operations.

Apparently Weaver has done pretty well with their product. I had to call a number of LHS' before finding one who would order them for me.

Roger, I would tend to doubt that. Weaver's utility poles were designed and marketed initially by my friend Neal Schorr. Several years ago he sold them to Weaver, with whom he has had a long term relationship. DMR's product was not as good, in my opinion, and Weaver would have little reason to acquire them.

I have a back issue of MR stashed somewhere with a 10 page article on scratch building poles and stringing them for an interlocking signal system. Anyone remember that? Pretty amazing stuff.

Just a guess George. You didn't mention MTH on your list so I used deductive reasoning.

Updated 2/2/2014:

  • After an interruption, I did some work last night on a couple of telephone / utility poles.
  • In the past week, I have investigated some touch up paint for the Weaver poles.
  • Friday night, I got a few more sidewalks touched up. That wood really absorbs paint.

Here are a few photos of the utility poles.

You can see the variations among components (standoffs, cross-arms, transformers).

George, I hope you're not sorry you don't have more wire protruding.
