Wayne, these drawings all received an A. Actually, the last drawing might be an A+ for its sensitivity and intense observation.

In my field of music it was very easy to grade exercises that had limited ways of doing things[like the answer to a math problem].I suppose there are like situations in art.But when creativity is involved it becomes,IMHO,very difficult to assign a grade,assuming there are no glaring technical errors.I also think that not many outside of the creative arts process understand this.Tramp and I can write stories about the same thing and they would be considerably different.[His would be much better written and a lot more fun to read than mine.]Both could be technically correct and deserve the same "grade".I see the drawings from Tramps' students that way.

Roger, so what grades would you give to the 4 drawings, given that you must grade each one differently?

My point was that I found it nearly impossible,for me,to grade this type of thing.

When I taught basic music theory and assigned a small composition, the grade would be determined,often,by following the "rules" that were involved for that particular exercise.It was possible for all to get an A.

Assuming all of the rules were followed,I too would have given all As.

I found the differences in the last two,which appear to me to be pine cones,to show that the last artist looked at the "little" things a little more closely as evidenced by some broken or deformed pieces.

I am one of those that can find good stuff in almost anything.I think that sometimes students can become too discouraged with negative comments and I always try to find something good to say.I did teach in one school that allowed only a certain percentage of As in each class.

Roger, I agree. All four of those drawings went beyond my expectations. It took each student many hours and many tries to achieve those results. I edited the drawings maybe three or four times, showing them the problems and strengths. I was delighted by these final results because they went beyond merely achieving a good grade. Pine cones and stones are difficult to draw, and require intense observation and patience. I asked them to draw each arm of the pine cone as if it were a portrait of someone they loved.

I'd be curious to know the age of the students? The last artist either has some innate natural ability or has absorbed your training extremely well, maybe both! It would be interesting to see what their first effort was like to see how far they have advanced. If they were ALL doing stick figures, they have come a very long way.
