Different Flash Modes

I suck at taking photos!!!

Now that that's out of the way, I thought I would post in this section to see what everyone thinks.

I'm using a Nikon Coolpix L22 digital camera, it takes "good enough" photos for most uses.

Here's 5 photos I took from the same location/distance of my Seaboard 4-6-0. The engine has a Weaver chassis, scratch built boiler, and a Williams brass USRA tender. The room lighting is from (2) 22" LED ceiling fixtures plus a 2-bulb fluorescent fixture just behind me over the stairs.

1st photo was taken with the flash set to AUTO:

2nd photo taken with flash set to Auto with red-eye reduction:

3rd photo taken with flash set to OFF:

4th photo taken with flash set to Fill Flash - fires when picture is taken to fill-in (illuminate) shadows and back-lit subjects:

5th (last) photo taken with Slow Sync - Auto flash combined with slow shutter speed (used to capture background at night or dim light):

The 3rd photo (no flash) looks best to me under the lighting conditions I had, although the front of the engine is not well lighted. Photos 1,2, and 4 look too dark IMO. The last one (5) is too light IMO, but it does show the detail of the engine front better.

Here's a photo I took of my Williams brass 2-8-2, I think this one was also with flash turned OFF:

One thing I need to do is make a diorama setting so I can take better photos with decent scenery and background.
