Overhead Wire Traction

Postby webenda » Mon Aug 28, 2017 12:30 am

Why are some railways called, "Traction Lines?"

trac·tion
ˈtrakSH(ə)n

noun

1. the action of drawing or pulling a thing over a surface, especially a road or track.

2. the grip of a tire on a road or a wheel on a rail.

synonyms: grip, purchase, friction, adhesion

Adhesion railway or adhesion traction is the most common type of railway, where power is applied by driving some or all of the wheels of the locomotive. ... The term is particularly used when discussing conventional railways to distinguish from other forms of traction such as funicular or cog railway.

What I want to do is start a thread of electric traction photos where the source of power is an overhead electric wire(s.) The photo alone should have enough appeal that no accompanying text is required. That does not mean text is not welcome.

Image appeal is highly dependent on the personality and mood of the person posting the image, which I find is a good thing.

I'll start with a couple that appeal to me.

Thank you Dave. I didn't know any city still had electric buses.

That gives me an idea, a free electricity for my Chevy Volt idea.

Boston, Seattle, and San Francisco may still have them, too.

I have doubts that a Volt roof can support those poles w/o some redesign efforts. Parking might be a challenge,

The car can move on battery power if wires are not present and the poles (lightweight hollow carbon tubes) telescope down into the fat part of the pole bases. The pole base mounts where the sun roof would go and I agree, the mounting hardware will require reinforcement under the roof skin.

Wayne,

I like this and assume it will also include traction that uses rails also, street cars, interurbans.
I also would appreciate identification of what and where it is. If possible.

Roger,

Tell me what happens when you place your mouse arrow over one of the photos in this thread and press the right click button.

I got a little menu. I clicked on show image location and then tried image info. I didnot get what or where it is.
I have never seen anything like the first post.

You have a different drop down than I do. I do not get "image location" nor do I get "image info."

Here is what I get with a "right click."

And here is what I get when I "left click" on "Search Google for image" =>

The image is of the worlds first electric highway, it is in Sweden, the date of the report was June, 2016 and it was constructed by Scania.

There is another article about Siemens building an eHighway in Germany – First infrastructure for electric trucks on a German autobahn.

Are there any other photos you would like information on Roger?
