Drove down to Halethorpe yesterday morning and picked up the lot from the estate sale. A 1930's era Lionel set that's been completely repainted by the previous owner, probably worth about the thirty bucks I gave for it:

My understanding is that this set was received new back in the day (a couple cars added subsequently), then refurbished by the original owner decades later, perhaps in the 1960's. It had been sitting in a nice dry attic for the last 30-40 years after the original owner's passing. Virtually zero collector value in this condition, but epic provenance.

That looks like a pretty nice find.

If a friend says I have a old train set, would you like to look at it? Trouble is they have heard old Lionel is worth a lot of money so when you offer the going rate they think you are ripping them off.

All that old stuff is really neat, but I'm glad I never succumbed to it's attraction. Not knocking anyone for what they like, but the 2 rail addiction is bad enough!

Yup, I can totally agree with that. I just can't pass the stuff by, especially if it's in relatively decent shape (by my operator sensibilities) and if it's got some sort of sentimental value (even if not my personal sentiments, lol).

It's really starting to pile up around here. To be honest, I need intervention :D

The prewar collectors seem only interested in stuff in near-mint condition and with all original boxes/packing materials. Other than a few exceptions, the rest of the stuff is pretty much in free-fall. I passed on a nice postwar Lionel set recently featuring a 2046 Hudson, but no boxes...I think it sold for thirty-seven bucks.

I could easily get interested in that early stuff, but I already have enough "vices". I have to say, I don't understand the box collectors.
