Talk about a train wreck! I'll give him an A- for effort/enthusiasm.

There was an article in the old Model Builder magazine about doing something like this and an early edition of OGRR (back when the Dentist was running the mag) about kitbashing a Pennsy T1 or S1 from PW parts.

Made it race against time.

I remember the T1 article. It was a series and began when OGR was OSR. I wasn't aware Vane Jones was a dentist if that's who you mean.

I wouldn't pay a whole lot for it, but I think it would be an interesting item to own.

If you look at it from the conceptual standpoint and ignore it as a "model" of anything, it's pretty brilliant IMHO. A tremendous amount of work went into that.

I agree. At the time that it was made, there wasn't any other option and that was probably a pretty extravagant exercise that somebody took on to get what was wanted.

When I first started coming to York (2000 -2003), I remember talking to a guy who was making PRR K4s’ from two postwar locomotives (2025s?). This was before Lionel introduced their accurate version. Only MTH’s version was out there (1997) and they were snapped up.

How deeply do you regret not being at York in 1997 and snapping up an MTH K4?

At the time, I was very sorry I had missed out on it. But in 1997 I didn't even know York existed. That engine listed in the catalog for $700.   That was a huge amount of money to me at that time (it's not small now by any means, either!). The only thing Lionel had to offer at the time was their postwar 2-6-4 :( . (I was ignorant of Weaver or Williams.) So, I was in a real quandry. I had come back into the hobby after a 25 year absence and I wanted a more scale-like engine, but the prices advertised in magazines put me into sticker shock.

Eventually, later in the 2000s, Lionel came out with a realistic K4s (which was still too expensive for me). I bought a first Williams K4s from TrainCity (then located in Erie, PA) and then a second from Public Delivery Track.

In hindsight, I'm very glad I missed out on that PS-1 engine.
