PRR Station at Weirton, WV

Postby G3750 » Fri Sep 08, 2017 8:45 pm

All,

Someone (can't remember who) asked me what the station at Weirton (right in the mill) looked like. This was located right at Crawford's Crossing.

I had forgotten that that station was in an unusual place.

Yes, right below the overpass that carries Main Street through the mill.

That's the station on the left. Blooming Mill is on the right.

The stairs leading up and to the right go to the overpass.

This station was served by a Pennsy commuter train that dropped plant workers off right in the mill.

When I worked in the mill during the summers of 1972, 1973, and 1974, the station served as the mill's shoe store (steel-toed).

Thanks for the pic George...the station layout has a long footprint, much longer than the end-shot reveals. It is faintly reminiscent of the B&O station at Meyersdale:

So, which one of you is going to get busy building a model of a station then?

Not me. I will have quite a challenge just fitting the steel mill buildings I want onto the layout. I hope to take a crack at the Steubenville, OH station eventually.

Not me either...if I'm going to build a scale model of a station I'd probably finish off this one The Old Man started a few years before he cashed out:

Image

Built old-school, with stucco walls cut from coarse-grit sandpaper, a masonite roof, panel-doors and windows cut and layered using cardstock. Entirely manufactured using scraps from the workshop.

Another project on an actuarial-challenged list, lol...

I agree - finish it! It deserves your finishing it.

Alright, I'll move it up a few notches on the project list. I've got a partially-built watch-tower of his around here somewhere as well...if I make a run at completing these I'll probably finish that one first as it's quite a bit smaller and I actually could find room for it on the layout.

Nice work, like the use of the sandpaper for stucco.
Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?
