For fathers day I bought tickets for my dad and I to ride the 'Joliet Rocket,' this summer's Nickel Plate 756 excursion from Joliet to Chicago. Besides the main attraction, I was able to catch a few other trains while I was there. The trip was very nice and the accommodations were excellent. It was a great experience and it was the first time seeing a big steam train like this in person
Amtrak at Joliet Station
Metra 108- this unit provided HEP power for our train and pulled us back on the return trip from Chicago
Power at Joliet
About 30 minutes into our trip we disembarked and the 765 backed up and ran by us for photo-op
We arrived in La Salle St station around 5, and were greeted with a band and catered dinner at the station

On our way back we swing by Homewood, Il, which is CN headquarters for the US.

765 and the 1225 are impressive at speed (actually impressive sitting there doing nothing ).
Most astounding part is the "chuff's" blend together so it sound more like a 21mm gatling gun than what we usually think of from steam engin (usually based on "sound" from movies and TV).
Nice pictures, glad you enjoyed the trip!

Once I built a railroad, I made it run,
Made it race against time.
Once I built a railroad, now it's done --
Brother, can you spare a dime?

I agree. That is what I remember also.
They could sound that way at not real high speeds.
