Updated 9/9/2017:

  • Went through some storage boxes and retrieved a lot of research material. That's now organized and filed so I can access it.
  • Hung all the artwork in the workshop and train room.
  • Finished assembling the spray booth.
  • Ordered a fence for the drill press.
  • Bought screws and carriage bolts, washers, nuts for the Staging Area bench work (and beyond).
  • Ordered switches for the Staging Area from Ross Custom Switches.
  • Estimated the amount of shelving that will be needed in the Staging Area. Requested a quote from one of the vendors.
  • Started applying shellac to the Staging Area bench work lumber. That's currently in the garage.

I still have a few more things to do in the workshop before I can declare victory - set up the table saw, get the work spaces cleared, and run the sweeper. But it's very close.

Lots to do, but my wife was kind enough to help. Which is good, because there is a lot of wood to shellac.

Real shellac and not varnish or polyurethane?

We're coming to decreased efficiency and effectiveness in the name of environmental correctness.

I can't say I'm happy with the way it goes on, either. Doesn't look particularly good either.

Water-based? "Flammable liquid and vapor" would seem to indicate otherwise, including the clean-up instructions which require "alcohol or ammonia and water". Maybe I haven't shellac'd anything in a while, lol...

I've always used alcohol based - got bottles of solid shellac in my shop....

The Zinsser stuff I found was all water based stuff.......like the can of water clean up polyurethane I have.

I guess - was at the HD to get a can of lacquer thinner recently - that stuff gotten expensive. I downloaded the SDS and I think I'll mix up a few gallons before I retire.........

Can't disagree with you - not liking most paints and finishing agents nowadays.

If it's "real" shellac, aka dissolved resin from the Lac bug it's dissolved in alcohol which is sort of water soluble (while still liquid). I've always found ammonia to be a better cleanup product.

I don't think the shellac has changed, just the packaging to make it seem more environmentally correct.

That's what it's supposed to be......

I've just used alcohol and then sop & water

I don't think the shellac has changed, just the packaging to make it seem more environmentally correct.

Much to the horror and dismay of the Lac bugs, and not unlike the Hupyrian beetles.

My ignorance...never realized shellac used alcohol as a solvent. I'm confusing it with varnish which is oil-based as best I recall.

Well at this point, I am going to try the following options:
  • Try applying the shellac with a paper towel or rag to see if I can get a smooth, no-drip look and still make reasonable progress.
  • Try applying a stain+polyurethane product I picked up with either a paper towel or a rag.

Maybe I should have more patience, but it's really tough for me.
