Lucas,

One more big THANK YOU!
for your continued postings of 'real life' current railroading.

It is especially interesing to me as I have been to some of the same places and have seen
some of the same locos at another time, sometimes in another place.

Keep on!

Thank you.

These old catenary supports are quite interesting. They look like they are constructed of formed concrete, and have some interesting architectural details.

They were cast concrete. Electrification ran from the Rouge Complex in Dearborn 23 miles down river to Flatrock. The catenary supports were cast at the Rouge complex using cement manufactured at the plant. The arches were so well made and so heavy (7.5 tons each) they were never removed!

Loco's were Ford built at the Highland Park assembly plant.

The Rouge was an incredible complex. It wasn't just steel that was made there. They processed coal to make coke, limestone for cement and flux for the smelting iron. They owned a quarry off of Lake Erie that had nearly pure silica sandstone that was cut and transported up river to make automotive glass. Rubber was imported to make tires. Basically anything that went into a car was processed on site. Electric and steam power were made at the complex. Total vertical integration. The internal railroad used thermos bottle steamers that would "charge up" with high pressure steam and run for eight hours. No worry about ash or open flames from the grates. Used mainly inside many of the massive buildings on the complex.

Lucas,
How long has that paint scheme been around on the above CN loco?
Could you show more of a broadside view?

It's actually a former ConRail unit that just rebadged as a CN unit. There are a lot of color variations on CN equipment as only minimal painting is done. Plus there are elements of their former US subsidiaries, e.g. GTW that were actually painted blue with red noses that may not bear explicit CN marks. They also acquired the former Illinois Central in 1998.

If it went in a car, NO!

Well he didn't refine his own oil but there was a Marathon refinery almost directly across the Rouge River from the complex!

Great reference book on the complex:
