It'll print in overhead transparency film,

Yeah, but do they make red overhead transparency film? Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk...

Just saw one of those overhead projectors at an estate sale...some people keep everything  Unsurprisingly, the listing said it needed a bulb. Of course it did...

Actually, I think I've seen some.....but when I wanted green in clerestory windows, etc. I just printed a long green block and cut what I needed to fit into the roof. Leftovers have ended up in door transoms and the like.

I use one to project my campaign sign onto the house. Local municipality says campaign signs cańt be bigger than 4x8. Ím trying their limits @ 15x15 feet and the ACLU is helping. Long story. Borough says “ signs cańt light up” . I say it´s content based censorship. Neighbor has a 30 ft christmad tree with lights and never gets fined. Not a story for a train site. But i use an overhead every night.

I recall various instructors using them regularly, but that was 45-50 years ago, and they seemed like old tech then. How sharp is the projected image at 15x15?

Stopped by the liquor store this AM to pick up some "supplies". While there, I noticed they were chucking a bunch of store displays, many made using one-sided corrugated. With their permission, helped myself to a bunch of it...probably a lifetime supply.

I had one of those printers back in the day.

HP sells (or sold) a special overhead projector film for their ink jet printers. It had one side that had a frosty tooth to hold the ink as it dried. Ordinary acetate won't work and the ink will just run off. :(

You might have some luck printing on ink jet decal film and applying that to the acetate. I have not tried that.

Thanks for that, rio. I’ll look around and see if I can find any of that transparency film, especially in red. Most of the stuff I remember was just clear.

In the past, I’ve used vellum paper to print windows. That stuff works pretty well until some kid pokes a finger through it, lol. You can print on it in any color, and inkjet print/color bonds to it well (you just have to set it aside for 15-20 minutes to make sure it’s dry). It’s translucent, so interior light is visible.

Back to the craft store today to pick up a bottle of medium blue acrylic craft paint.

It’s not bad. If you figure in that it´s only block lettering with red and white. There is a lot of color wash out and a 1740’s stone wall does not help. I have another one that i might use. It´s much smaller than that ET. Phone home looking thing i use.

Got 2 box packs of the clear from 3M in the cabinet if you need a few sheets,  Bottom drawer of the file cabinet has all sorts of odd paper in it.....HP plotter paper, Phaser printer paper, etc...... As long as it runs through my ink jet or laser printer, it's useful!

I have some if you want to stop by. (Still have my overhead projector, too, from giving classes and modelling clinics. GRIN!)

As far as colour, try putting the clear stuff with the mullions printed over the opening then adding the red gel behind. The lamination should work, I'd think.

Worth a try, if for no other reason than to see how well an inkjet print adheres to a transparency

School-teacher swung by tonight to carve punkins; the skins on these things were thick and tough (maybe the effect of the prolonged drought this summer). Meanwhile, over on the layout they were laying in a load of Baby Ruth minis for tomorrow night:

Hope everyone is ready for the trick-or-treaters.

Maybe you could try projecting your campaign sign onto a christmas tree? :D

Not a story for a train site.
Or, maybe you could have a 4 ft x 16 ft sign with a 16 ft long track along the bottom of the sign. Have one of those bumper trolleys running back and forth along the track and you'd have an outdoor train layout....
