Small Hardware Source

Postby 86TA355SR » Wed Feb 08, 2023 1:41 pm

What’s everyone’s source for small screws, washers, nuts, etc? Adding to that, drill bits (less than .020”)?

I find myself constantly in need of small hardware to fasten/build projects.

I’ve tried most common places (Fastenal/McMaster Carr/local hardware stores, MM, amazon, etc) nothing I need is small enough. Usually I can get down to 0-80 but nothing smaller.

For reference, need screws small enough for steam locomotive valve gear hangers, etc.

Thanks.

00-90 is as small as you will find these days, and only in brass. Micro Fasteners has nuts machined to simulate prototype fasteners, also in brass, and steel 0-80 bolts. Walthers was the only reasonable source for 00-90.

That was not true in 1950 - Moody would sell steel hex heads down to triple zero -120 for cheap. I am using the last of my Coles Power Models steel hex heads - they may still have them, but I am not paying a buck each.

Best bet now is brass pins for valve gear. There is a basket place in Nantucket that sells them in quantity for cheap, and will drop them into the USMail if you ask nicely.

I just order from China, hundreds at a time. I guess China may not be a favourite source. The truth is thats where most of our models come from. In Australia it just about impossible to find a local source at any quantity.

I believe this company to be the best source of scale nuts, bolts, rivets, tools and so on. I know of no other like them. Scale Hardware carried more inventory, but this company (Model Motor Cars) bought them out several years back and I feel very fortunate they carry the line.

D
This is a little messed up, format-wise. But it is a great deal if you need lots of carbon steel 00-90 screws. McMaster-Carr.

I now just use brass 00-90 to pin the Walschaerts and crosshead links. A scale nut looks good, and for testing (before Loctite or solder) I can easily fit everything together and check for operation and appearance.
