Union Pacific vol 2
Re: Union Pacific vol 2
It is Bob, and since you show some interest I will post some photos, unless of course you would like to post them. I hate posting to Shutterfly just to post here. Every now and again, when I see something truly nice superior (regardless of gauge) I pick it up to inspect it and enjoy it a short while and then resell it. This turbine is one of those models.
Re: Union Pacific vol 2
The model is nicer than any of the OMI brass turbines I've owned over the decades, in all gauges. But, I guess this is where computer technology shines. I never knew this level of detail could be attained in plastic. A truly great model for under $800 list price and less from retailers. They are in production of their 2nd or 3rd run so apparently the HO guys understand the value.
Comes in two series, rivet counter and museum.....I bought the museum series of course to see what they offered. The "museum" series has some upgrades over the "rivet counter", like hinged and sliding doors, a prime mover model in the "B" unit (since the doors open and close), spring loaded sensors (looks like spring loaded staples protruding out of the truck bottoms) that will sense when the "A" and "B" units move through turnouts or crossovers, so the sound system can make a wheel "clunk" like the prototype. Way overboard in my opinion, but incredible realism.
It has the diesel sound of the small hostler motor in the "A" unit to simulate yard movement and only allows only 10 mph like the prototype. If you want to pull a train, you have to start the turbine in the "B" unit with sound coming from that unit. Another over-the-top feature is the turbine disc in the exhaust duct is powered by a gearbox and rotates. A lot more features, but that's all I can remember right now. It's only problem............TOO SMALL!.

Re: Union Pacific vol 2
I'm not knocking this model in particular, but there is a third category of detail apart from rivet counter and museum: IDIOT.
That one is the hatches and lids/doors that open to nowhere, and the details that are hidden in normal running. All they do is add to the price and serve NO purpose. No Thanks! Add to that any detail that is so fragile it won't survive normal (careful) handling! End of rant.

Re: Union Pacific vol 2
Yeah, no lids or hatches open on this model. I think the OMI 90's and early 2000 built turbines did have opening hatches.
Re: Union Pacific vol 2
Throw in there opening nose doors on diesels. All that crap just inflates the price and adds little to the model.

Spectacular model.

From bare brass to repaired, detailed, painted & weathered. One of my favorite pieces in the collection.

Don't remember. I guess it wasn't all that important.
