Missouri Pacific PA,s from SSM
Well here are the photo,s for the Missouri Pacific PA"s models from SSM. I helped with the design and detail
Package for these, Over all they did a supper job with what I sent them to use.
The graphics and paint are nice and clear---Lettering prototype paint diagrams placement matches.
They did 4 numbers I opted for 8019 and 8026.
I truly think they have set the bar on the PA's for future models. I am now collecting data for the
Mopac E6 AB models.

We've been have an ongoing discussion about the diameter of the PA/PB wheels. I always thought they were 40". Quite a few people are telling me they were 42" and some say they were "Fat 40s". Others say, some RR were 40 and others were 42. I found documentation showing both (some say one thing others say the opposite). Your thoughts please.
I ask because I want to make the P:48 conversion kits and I'd prefer getting it correct. I suppose, in the end, I'll do whatever Sunset did or what the customer requests.

Jay, mine arrived Friday and I'm going to try to do the conversion today. Will measure what Scott actually installed.

Jay and all interested. I was ask this question just last week from the chi show. Being that my interest is in Mopac
all my data on erection card drawings show that there PA's had 40" wheels. I also measured a KEY models PA and they have
40" wheels as well.
I will measure the SSM I have and will let you know, they are not 36 there too big.
Now the 42" and fat 40" never heard of. But if there are specific rail road data cards that show that that is new to me.

All kidding aside. The term may be slang for multi-wear wheels. They can be turned multiple times before replacement is required.

That's exactly what they are Jay, when the wheels are brand new they actually measure 42" but are otherwise identical to a 40" wheel, just a thicker tire. You can get more cuts on the wheel before it hits the witness groove. For some unexplainable reason, otherwise "qualified" engineers seem to enjoy flat spotting wheels. I guess they can't figure out that automatic brake handle thingy, so they hit the independent. Yeah, that must be it.

Well it is a crap shoot. I did not take my wheel set out but the flange depth is ,046----close I could get is .923 dia,.
that makes it .923 at the flange wall would be 44".
So adding in for a tapper of 3 deg I am in the ball park of 42" on the SSM.
And the mystery continues.

I too have the MoPac #8019 PA2 and removed the Ow5 wheel sets during the process of converting to P:48 wheel sets. Scott's original wheel sets measure 0.872" where the wheel meets the flange, making that portion a scale 42" in diameter. If the prototype measures elsewhere for diameter, please advise and I will check. However, no where on the wheel does it measure 0.832" which it would have to be a scale 40". For me, this is perfect - as Bill mentioned at the show, MoPac used a 40" wheel. The P:48 sets are a perfect match for me.

Well, 40" is better for me. I have several thousand more of them than the 42". I probably only have a few thousand 42~
How was the conversion? Does the model still run?
