Hello all ... flipping through a February 1935 Model Craftsman , a photo of the new "first" streamlined steam engine , the Commodore Vanderbilt aside the replica DeWitt Clinton jumps out at me ... so thought I'd "re-shoot" the image in O scale .
DeWitt Clinton an Alexander kit from the early 50's and a scratch built Commodore built atop a Lionel 700E chassis ..believed also built in the 50's.
Here is a link to learn all about the real NYC streamlined steamers

Sure is a lot of difference between prototype and model of the Commodore, isn't there?
Must be the prototype is wrong.

Help me out, didn't the NYC or Big Four have a similar "bathtub" shrouded Pacific used on the shop-built Mercury?
BTW Carey that is one fascinating model, I have weakness for shrouded steam and that is the Bomb!

Thanks for posting the link above very informative read.
Debruin the info you seek is in the link above several pages down. Page 20. I too am interested in streamlined engines as they mostly pulled passenger trains.

Hello all ..thank you for your kind words ....I'm very fortunate to have the Commodore ......Marklin was the only mass manufacturer of the Commodore back in the day ... 1936 /7 .......no clue way no one else jumped on the band wagon ....of course Marklin did not sell very many of them either ... ..perhaps most folks like their steamers filled with pipes and pumps etc ...
this is a reproduction of the O scale Marklin model ( 3 rail O gauge)
this is an original Marklin in 1 gauge ...... buying one of these will take a big bite out your savings account.
Cheers Carey

No clue? Maybe the upside down bathtub motif did not sell well back then.

Yup. Probably didn't hold much water either.

Hello all
Ok so upside down bathtubs did not fly in the scale world (vintage) .....but they sure sold like wild fire in the tinplate world ... Marx must have sold a million or two of them ..Lionel a distant second with only a few hundred thousand + - ...
not to offend the more sensitive scale viewers no photos will be posted ...but for the brave just put "marx commodore vanderbilt" in your search bar..and click on images ... ..viewer discretion advised
Cheers Carey
