Is this the right frame for CLW PRR H10?

Postby Dennis Holler » Thu Sep 14, 2017 7:46 pm

I think this frame looks promising, any thoughts from those who have the CLW version? I posted on the other forum but I know most of you frequent both... Besides, you can feel free to post some pictures of the CLW 2-8-0 and the Saginaw 2-8-0, 4-4-2, and 4-6-0...

Either way, let me know, did I get lucky or is it close but no cigar!

Thanks Bob!
I felt pretty good about it, but what are the odds?? I was looking at American Flyer junk and just happened to take a second glance and then started thinking, checking and comparing pictures... If nothing else, I thought I could use it.

You found that in an American Flyer pile?

The giveaway, from here, is the steel sides with the brass spring sockets. Not sure about the cylinder saddle - I can look at one of mine.

Carey,

I recognize the tail beam casting...CLW H-10. Looks like a couple of the spring haners are missing from the third driver set

I have got to start looking at AF junk more often now,

You know, some of the most unlikely and best deals come when you find stuff miss labeled or as a throw in on the side. Plus it helps that I'm not smart enough the limit myself to one interest in trains.....

I have a built-up CLW H10 chassis that is part of a kit but no photo in my files. I will take one and post it but in the meantime here are a couple of pages from the instructions:

Note that the diagrams do not show a leaf spring assembly at all drivers. I don't recall if my chassis has them or not. More later.

Odd, my CLW H-10 does not have any spring hangers; I guess that the original builder did not care or was lazy thinking that they would be somewhat hidden. Note that I would never have noticed until they were mentioned here.

What captures your coil springs?

I pick up both polarities from the tender - I never figured out how to install those driver tire pickups.

Mine is not sprung.

Mine picks up one side from the tender, the other from the loco.

I got mine (#7676) in a trade for a three-rail engineering sample MTH H-10; my friend is three-rail and I am two-rail. Mutual satisfaction on both sides.

Yours may be Saginaw - cast bronze frame, cast iron drivers. Later CLW had plastic drivers.

The MTH looks accurate at this distance.

At closer inspection, both look MTH. The black one is not CLW or Saginaw, for sure. Nice models, though!
